Photographer for a fun wedding.. Do they exist?

sarah1976, 20 February, 2014 at 00:14 Posted on Planning 0 23

I'm not getting married until 2016, but I've been looking around online etc, for a photographer that shows pictures of people having fun at weddings.

Most I've seen show the usual very posed photos, and that's it!

Whilst I think the very posed photos are lovely, and I will be having a few of these taken at my wedding, I'd also love my photo album to show us having the best day of our lives and having a laugh.

Our day will be a day full of laughter, on that I have no doubt. Myself, by h2b and all our guests always have a great laugh when we're all together so I know what our wedding day will be like. ?

I want a photographer that will take very natural photos and even silly photos of us all.

I want a photographer where if they see someone with their shirt hanging out the back of their trousers, to take a pic. If they see me pinching my new husbands bum, take a pic. If the see one of my bridesmaids pulling a funny face, take a pic. I want a photographer to take pictures of the fun stuff, not just the serious stuff.

I want people to look at my photo album and I want to hear a few 'awws' and see a few tears, but most of all I want them to see the pictures and laugh and remember our day as being one of the best days ever - a day they laughed alot.

Do you know what I mean?

Are there any photographers out there that aren't always as serious as their website pictures show they are?

    Exactly what I mean, yes..

Pictures like that are real pictures of what real kids do. That is far from a faked posed picture.. ?

The thing is they are personal photos for the clients only, I just went through a few weddings to post some examples and thought better of it, I have one where the bride is looking up a guests trousers because he split them and everyone around her are falling over laughing.

I think Bruce is right to an extent that some you're unlikely to see on websites but there are photographers that do this kind of thing. Look for photos where groups of people are laughing, playing a game, wiping a tear from there eye etc etc and you'll see photographers who are capturing all the moments of the day. There are quite a few out there so keep looking. We picked our photographer because we wanted the photos to be a snapshot of the whole day not just groups standing around and pictures of us looking misty eyed. Our tog had some great photos of capturing little moments in the day.

Some photos will be more fun than others depending on the client and what they wanted too.

I chose my photographer for the same reason. They are out there you just need to look in the right places and find the one right for you!

most photographers I came across worked 'documentary' style.

like mentioned above the photos you've described are often very personal to the couples and are unlikely to be shared online!

Search for photographers who have blogs and get an idea what they do... If you like it arrange a meeting and request to see a few weddings they have done to give you a better idea!

There are loads! A relaxed and fun feeling was what I was looking for and I had a short list of about 10 photographers!

My photographer was Camera Hannah - we have very few posed photos!

She is the kind of photographer I'm looking for.

The majority of photos are of people being themselves and being relaxed, and not being ordered about to stand here, do this, do that, etc.

I know I have plenty of time to keep looking, but I was getting a little worried that the kind of photographer I wanted, wasn't out there.

    Thanks all xx

Our TOG sold himself to us by saying that he likes to blend in to the background, capture the atmosphere, take photos of people while they aren't posing. I think what everyone else said is right; you won't see these pictures in portfolios as they are quite personal - talk to TOG's and find out what their style is, how they go about the day. Ask them if they have any silly 'shoots' under their belt, what are the funniest pictures they've taken?

Another thing I've done is scoured Pinterest for pictures I think are super cool and will print them all off to give to TOG when we meet with him in May - to give him an idea of the kinds of pictures I'm hoping for.

Good luck - you've plenty of time to skim the cream of TOGs from the surface Smiley smile

I couldn't have said it better myself ^^^^^^

The thing is there are too many photographers out there calling themselves documentary photographers that are the complete opposite of that term, it's a word/buzz word that is passed around for two reasons, search engines and probably because they find it easier to pass off as a photographer because its "easy" but a true documentary photographer will capture emotional moments, the fun, the laughter and the sadness (the story of your day in pictures) and they have the experience to know when all this happens to capture it, a documentary photographer will not interfere with your day, yes they do the usual family photos and some setup bride & groom photos as well but mainly they will document your wedding day.

    Totally agree with this......

As said, I have some images that I wouldn't post on an open forum including possibly the best "sting" photo played on one of the Stag group by the others guys....

I like weddings to be relaxed, although I would not claim to be either a formal or documentary wedding photographer. I do shoot things that spontaneously happen although also create groups which I then deconstruct to allow natural things to happen. One hitcher commented that in all my photography, the subjects look relaxed......which is something I strive for.

Why do women do that when applying lippy to another????

I think for most photographers real enjoyment of the job comes from capturing the real moments that you describe. It's the moments you're talking about that are often the ones which make you laugh & cry happy tears when you're looking back through your gallery.

It's all part of the art of story telling- and the very best photographers (IMO) are not always the ones who can just knock out a mean portrait, but the ones who capture the essence of the day, tell the story through real moments and can do the formal stuff in a relaxed, informal way.

There are lots of amazing photographers out there who offer that, some have posted above. I know it's a pain, but keep looking and you'll find someone you love.

We've got a couple of example galleries up on our website which you might want a look at.

I think it's also about the wedding party having fun though tbh. If everyone is having a fun time it's easy to capture it, like the game of tug or war below.

The whole set of images can be viewed here as I can never post images that are not squashed it seems lol.

Yep photographers like this do exist, you just need to look for the nearest dinosaur farm.

If you find a photographer with a style you like ask to see full wedding galleries rather than just the wow images cherry picked for their homepage, most photographers are happy to show you and it's the best way to find out if their style matches yours.

I think every wedding photographer who truly enjoys what they do loves to capture the fun, and the reason you don't see too much around is just like the others have said we all have photos that fit the bill but then you have to think hmmm don't think they would appreciate those being shown, as with the biggest laughs sometimes comes the not so flattering faces, so you do have to be careful what you show.

Not sure I understand your dinosaur comment but I agree with the rest of what you said about looking at full weddings, I have over 10000 photos on my site which you would think would be enough for any couple to make their mind up whether you are capable of shooting their wedding.

I think you better warn your friend that having text the same colour as the sites background is a big no no in googles eyes and google will kick his site from it's listings.

I'd just like to say a huge 'Thank you' to you all for your replies to my thread.

I now understand as to why photographers might not show the 'funny' kind of photos on their websites. I understand now that some people might want to keep them private.

It's really opened my eyes reading this thread and I'm happy to say that I'm now positive that there is a photographer out there who would be more than happy to give me the kind of wedding photos I'd love.

    Thank you xx

    Good luck in your search!

There are loads of us out there just like that. Do a bit of research, have a chat and meet up with your favourites. Pick the one you are most comfortable around, then it's likely that your guests will be comfortable too, forget the camera is even there and BOOM! Lovely shots Smiley smile
