Photographer recommendations?

Maltey, 7 April, 2013 at 14:04 Posted on Planning 0 20

We've sorted just about everything now, except the photographer. i've asked about 5 different people to do it because I feel I should have somebody but then realise it's just not what I want.

BIL is a photographer and I really like his style of photography, but of course he can't take photos of himself so we do have to have somebody else. What I ideally want is a clone of him lol.

I don't know what it is but the ones I've looked at have seemed very 'stuffy' and the photos don't have any character or life in them. Has anyone got any photographer recommendations? Please?! The wedding is only 3 months away and I'm losing my mind over this photographer!!

    Duh!

I thought I'd put where I was located! We're in Kent.

Budget is as little as possible lol. Ideally nothing over £1000, but we will only need the photographer a few hours, just to take ceremony and formal shots. After that BIL can take reception photos and we have another photographer in the family aswell, so the evening is covered.

£1000 is a decent budget for all day coverage. For a few hours cover you will be looking at about half that much.

It depends what day of the week though. i.e. I don't do half days on a Saturday as there's a lot of competition for that day.

You've asked a lot of photographers. But if they aren't actual professional wedding photographers I really recommend you only approach those as your budget is good and you don't have to take any chances with the end result.

Whilst I'm near to Kent you could try David Fenwick as he's very much in Kent. I don't know him personally but I see him about a lot online and his work is good and well considered.

Erm, it is the 13th July!! ?

And when I say I've asked a lot, I have been asking professionals. That's what I mean. I always knew from the beginning it wouldn't be family for the formal shots.

It's more like I spend hours looking through loads and then go oh that'll do, so email them and then realise that actually it's just not what I want.

Our wedding is a Saturday- will most people not do half days for a Saturday then?

Ahh I was going to suggest Emma-Kate! Ha!

She's Kent based though so might be worth emailing her for some recommendations?

You might be able to get someone at short notice then. Popular date the 13th July.

Could your BIL recommend anyone? Or does he know anyone who may be willing to do a couple of hours alongside him (maybe a student/someone starting up who has a similar style) so you're able to get pictures including him?

Well I do have somebody who is free, i just wondered before I confirm if there was anything 'better'.

The photos are nice enough, just nothing 'wow'.

ETA: Yeah I did ask him if he knew anyone but he didn't really help. He's not 'in the game' so to speak. He doesn't 'do' wedding photography, but he's taken photographs at weddings that I really like.

Do people usually travel in for photography then?

I'd kind of assumed that you could only ask people in bordering counties- so I've looked at a couple in London/Surrey.

Maybe I'm just sick of looking at photos- maybe the only reason none of them stand out is because I've looked at so many now!!

Hi, I'm in Kent and my photographer is Rich Lehmann. We've negotiated his price down as we don't want an album, but we have full day coverage, and he's more of a reportage photographer, so not too stuffy. He's a nice guy, too - I met up with him at a wedding fair at Hall Place and Gardens, where he's a recommended photographer. His website isn't the best, but having seen albums of full weddings he has shot, I do think he's good.

Another photographer I fell in love with, but is more expensive, is lollypop photography. Worth looking into whether they'd come down on price at all for you.

We're using Scott Johnson of The Edge Photography. He's based in Chelmsford but does travel all over (including overseas) and Kent. He does bespoke packages rather than advertising a few standard packages. He's done hundreds of weddings and is really down to earth.

I'm London based so I cover Kent and I'm within your budget (and my photography is very much about the people and emotions/atmosphere). Feel free to check out my work and see if you like the look of it Smiley smile

We are using DaffodilWaves and can't recommend her highly enough, she's a lovely lady and we can't wait for her to be a part of our day. The 13th of July is apparently a very popular date. Most photographers travel all over (I'm in Wiltshire and my tog is from Birmingham!) so don't feel limited to looking locally.

I'd be happy to come down to Kent!

Please take a look at my site, if it's of any interest, I'd be happy to pop down and have a chat with you, and BIL, if he's about!

    Pete x
