Photographer...help

Sheldon, 12 January, 2014 at 13:51 Posted on Planning 0 15

We live in chester but are getting married in Essex, OH is from Suffolk. Am i right in thinking i get my photographer from Essex area? Also do you have to specify what you would like them for eg, wedding preparations, ceremony, individual and group photos and leave once meal is served? Is this the norm? Was thinking of throw away cameras for the rest of the night plus family and friends to take there own pictures. Probably obvious questions just havent a clue on it all! Thanks x

Hello Sheldon (hoping this is inspired from Big Bang ?)

You can get your photographer from aaaaanywhere you want to. Don't be concerned about their location, just the service they offer.

It would help if you let them know as much info as possible so they can quote accordingly for it. From your post here, I would just tell them you want coverage from bridal preparations until you are seated for the meal

Reference the throw away cameras, don't waste your money lovely. The quality on them is terrible and that's if they develop properly.

I'm watching Big Bang now! ?

The developing is quite expensive on them too. I just know quite a few people that have been disappointed with the results.

Completely understand you don't want to miss anything. Peoples digital cameras will be better quality than the throw away ones so maybe provide personalised CD's so people can send you their photos or an online photo uploading account to people to upload them to there (I'm sure I've read on here there is such a thing).

Depending on budget, perhaps ask your Photographer to stay until just after the first dance so pretty much everything is covered by a pro and your friends and family can get the drunken selfies long into the night ?

We got married in London and our photographers are based in Cambridge - don't restrict yourselves to looking just in Essex.

They weren't cheap - from memory £1600 ish but there were two of them, Karen and Doug. They are amazing photographers and I can't describe how much I love my wedding photos. I think they were happy to travel as they were really taken with our venue and hadn't come across it before. https://howellphotography.co.uk/

Check out Daffodil Wave's portfolio - from what I've seen she's a fantastic photographer and has had loads of happy clients on here

Most togs will travel, many work overseas so I wouldn't worry about it.

What would help though is if you found someone with experience at your venue. You could search for (your venue) +photography and see what pops up. You may find your ideal tog that way and even if you don't, you may find some ideas anyway.

We live in Kent, are getting married in East Sussex and our TOG is coming all the way from Birmingham! In fact it is the lovely DW, and she is just as lovely in real life, so definitely check out her website Smiley smile

The vast majority will travel, so don't limit your search. Make sure that you see a whole wedding from a potential TOG rather than just the photos on their site too, this will give you an idea of what they can achieve over your whole day.

We originally considered throw away cameras too, but when we factored in the cost of developing it just seemed far too expensive for what would probably be a film filled with a few shots up noses and down trousers, with the majority not coming out properly! I think our TOG is staying until the 1st dance, but I can't remember, I'm hoping she will stay for a few drinks and a boogie once she's finished working anyway Smiley winking

Most photographers travel over the country for weddings, and as Chris said some even go abroad for weddings so I'd say to find someone whose work you really like and then contact them and depending on how far away they are, ask about whether they require travel expenses on top. I think most of us have a certain amount of miles we're willing to include in the price, or I know some photographers who include travel anywhere in the UK in their packages! So I wouldn't limit yourself - just find someone you love and go from there. ?

We're getting married in Suffolk and our photographer is coming from south Kent - he actually laughed at how worried we were about asking him to travel! We found ours from chatting to people at a wedding fair in London. It was important for me that we got the preperations captured so we went for the bigger (and more expensive) package, but we'll be doing throw away cameras in the evening as well, because I think they will probably be quite funny!

I photograph weddings all over the place, Suffolk and Essex isn't too far, have 3 for a Suffolk venue this year already ? but do a search for your venue first just to see who has photographed a wedding there but saying that we photograph weddings all the time at venues we have never photographed before. Good luck.

As a converse comment, there are advantages of hiring a tog that is local-ish. Being known to the venue, registrar, minister, Vicar or Priest is more likely to give the local photographer the edge when it comes to say shooting during the ceremony. Two venues near to me totally ban any photography from togs they don't know or limit them to the back of the room. Building up trust and a relationship opens more possibilities for the photography. Additionally, there have been reports on this forum over the years about togs coming long distances who get stuck in motorway traffic or caught up in bad weather. Some have even arrived as late as after the reception has started!!!!!!

If you do choose a tog that is travelling, do ask for what assurances they can give that the distance is not going to compromise your wedding. Do also ask how they will deal with this if they get a wedding the other end of the country for the day before yours......Ideally, you want them in a B+B or similar on the morning of your wedding close to you.......

The togs mentioned on this thread have a good reputation, although do be careful to check out these points if hiring others from distance. You certainly dont want your tog in Exeter on Friday, Edinburgh on Saturday and your wedding in Maidstone(for example) on the Sunday......My record was 5 weddings in one week and I was trashed at the end of the week......they were all local thankfully!!!!!

Peter is right, vicars / registrars have almost been traumatised by uncle bob snapping and jumping around that they just give a blanket ban on what a photographer can do and where they must stand, but if they know you then they know they can trust you, I have even photographed a registrars wedding, and a lot of local vicars also know me too.
Local photographers will also know an alternative route should any roads be blocked with either an accident or as at the moment floods -not only that but they will know which roads are likely to do so. They will know the across country roads that a sat nav wont, this will get them from your house to Church after seeing you and still get shots of the groom before you arrive and then use the knowledge of short cuts to get from the church to the reception before you.
The local photographer will know the very best places for shots at the reception venue, given the time of year and in all weather conditions and at all times of day,yes you can wing it if you are good but a local one wont need to and instead can put all their energy into the photos and not concern themselves about where to do them.
What's going to happen when the photographer who is 2-3 hours away breaks down -- the AA right ?, but they are still going to be late. If a local photographer breaks down, 1st they have the AA but if that's too long then they will no doubt have local friends or relatives who can pick them up within minutes.
Before you book someone its great to see a few whole weddings on line and that's the best way to look at whole weddings at your own leisure, but to fully appreciate how sharp and clear or how good the colours of the photos are then the best way to do this is to see them printed in real life in a face to face meeting which is what someone 2 hours away wont be able to do.
But if the local photographers just don't suit your needs then start looking ever outwards as the further out you look, some will charge extra not by the distance but by the time it takes to travel.

Well worth starting local, they know the area, venues etc and then expanding. Ultimately the pictures, professionalism and rapport you have with the photographer, regardless of where they are, will sway the decision. Most photographers will travel so dont necessarily restrict yourself to the immediate area.
