Photographers?

Bear, 26 April, 2008 at 23:01 Posted on Planning 0 19

Hi there. Thought I'd ask. What have people paid for their wedding photographers? just wondering what's an average price, preferably for the full day, including bridal preparation, probably up till the first dance, or thereabouts.

Also, how much do photographers charge for the copyright?? I'm in contact with one who does copyright free, and another who charge £200 for the copyright, is it just me or is that a bit much?

Also, any recommendation's for photographers in Norfolk?

When planning budgets I advice couples that they should look at between £950 - £1250 for photography. This would be for a full day coverage (until 1st dance).

Obviously there are a number of photographers who charge less and who charge more, but this is the average spend of my clients.

With regard to the copyright, I haven't come across anyone selling it before, the photographers usually hold onto it.

I know, yeah. Thing is, i want the copyright so i can produce more pictures, without having to go through the photographer.

Our weddings in november, so we should be able to get an 'off season' discount, hopefully.

I am paying £1650 for mine. He comes 2 hrs before wedding and stays till after speeches. For that we get a digital album and full use of all the photos, so we can do whatever we like with them. We are not getting a proper album as thats not what we want, but our price also includes 90 prints in a presentation box, up to 100 thankyou cards with our photo on. Website for our guests to view and purchase the photos, and 5 accessory albums.

Our photographer is one of H2B's mates and he charges £1400 (that's the best of his best) but he's giving us £250 off, haven't planned if I want photo's from home yet or anything but will sort that out closer to the time ?

Hi, I'm paying £550. I didn't want full day shots ie me getting ready until first dance. Just wanted a nice album. I'm having 2 hours of photography at the venue, then a 30 page leather bound album, which will consist of 1, 2, 3 or more photos per page. I'm happy with this as within budget and exactly what I wanted! (she is lovely too!, mixture of traditional/contemporary).

Firstly you don't Copyright to produce your own prints. You need right to reproduce. Most photographers won't give you copyright as this is their ownership of the photos and would stop them using them, for example in a sample album to show other brides and grooms. Most of the professional photography organisations do not approve of giving away copyright and it is legally dubious in any case. Many photographers will give a right to reproduce though.

Secondly, many of the busier wedding photographers won't see November (or any time really) as off-season. Weddings are popular all year round now and this year autumn seems especially popular. Rob currently has as many November weddings bookings as July weddings bookings. Also many photographers do other work as well as weddings - portraits, commercial work, etc. November is particularly popular for portrait work as people want portraits to give to family and friends for Christmas. You may get someone to give you a discount but TBH this would probably suggest that they aren't very busy, which may not be what you want. Sorry.

Price varies depending on several factors including time of coverage, number of photographers, type and size of album and access to copies of the digital images. A photographer will never hand over copyright of their images, but they may give you copies with limited rights to print and email. To give an indication of price we have a budget package for £590 which covers 2 hours for a single photographer and a basic album. Our top of the range package is a full days cover for two photographers, a digital storybook album (from any supplier you choose) and copies of all images shot on the day, cost £2750.

Of course, if you talk to your photographer you will find that most are willing to negotiate variations on the packages that they supply to fit what you want and what your budget will support.

We will cover Norfolk, by the way (without any travel costs)

We are paying £650 for 2 hours before the ceremony and up until the meal. for that we get a dvd of all the pictures taken (virtually all will be reportage as we dont like 'posed' photos) and a right to reproduce. we didnt want an album but the option is there for them to make us one at a later date, perhaps when finances have regained 'normality'!!

Indeed, the right to reproduce is often confused with copyright. I would suggest though that you obtain details of the size of files that you are getting as some photographers only give you files that will print well up to 6x4.

That part of Norfolk I know quite well. My brother works in Diss and has lived in Fersfield for getting on towards 30 years. My parents moved up there on retirement.

As others have said, no, you don't need copyright, just rights to reproduce.

With regards to the price, £200 is low to med from what I've seen my competitors doing which seem to range from £195-£750 in my area. Regardless of whether it's included in the price or an optional extra, it will be built into the price in some form.

I get a lot of people telling me they know it's deadly quiet this time of year and suggesting if I want their business I should give them a discount. You don't ask if you don't get but to be honest November and December are traditionally one of the busiest times of year for me!

Not only are lots of people choosing winter weddings now because it's a bit cheaper, but everybody suddenly wants to order their albums in time for christmas and there is a lot of family portrait work too.

The only real quiet time of year I see is Jan-Feb, and I'm usually way too knackered from the last 6 months to care!

Having never met or spoken to the man, I can't comment on his personality, but he does take some rather nice photographs... Certainly the photographer I would recommend for Norfolk.

Hi, just read your post and saw you needed reccomendations for photographers in Norfolk! I just got married in Norwich a few weeks ago and our photographer was fantastic, honestly I could not speak any higher of him! His name is Paul Studd. He charges 995 pounds and you get at least 150 6x9 photos (we got 286) and 8 hrs of coverage! He was so nice and kind and most of the time we didn't even realize he was there! You can get a cd of all the photographs for under 200 pounds if you want it.
    His website is
    http://www.paulstudd.co.uk/home.php

and the link to our photos is

If you need any help with other vendors or suppliers please feel free to pm me!

We didn't want any photos from our tog as we were having 2 weddings and wanted to combine the photos. Managed to finally find a local chap who was willing to do us a deal he'd never advertise (basically a CD of all the photos which we could do whatever we wanted with)...

its worth asking around if you're after something different. Having said that our chap said he'd only offer this cos ours was end Jan when there is little going on in the wedding world!

It was still £400 for his time and the CD. But I've just got a fab album from Truprint - 116 double sided colour photos with over 400 pix depicting both events, 12" x 12" and it cost me £113. That would have got me just 18 7 by 5 prints from my tog!
