Photographers and prices

AutumnRose, 17 February, 2009 at 11:27 Posted on Planning 0 14

As recommended by lots of lovely people on here and having booked my venue for July 2010, next on my list of things to do is to find a photograper.

There seems to be HUGE variation in prices for photographers around here (Kent/Sussex), with most falling in the £1500-£2000 bracket. This was more than i had imagined tbh!!! I did have a look on a website that offered a wedding service from £500 but most of the photos looked like they could have been taken by anyone and some were out of focus...

So, i'm wondering if photography for weddings is one of those 'You get what you pay for' things or if there are very good photographers about for around the £1000 mark.

Getting good photos is one of my priorities so if i have to pay to get what i want then fair enough but don't want to do so unnecessarily - if that makes sense!!!

You certainly get what you pay for. we paid £2500 from what i can remember. I really wanted coverage of me and H getting ready, so the photographer was with us all day from about 11am to 9pm. They took about 500 photos of which we had 200 in a lovely magazine style album. although it seemed alot of money (at least it was to us), we still think it was worth paying

That's what i want, someone with us all day. Also want loads of pictures, i found some photographers seem to limit that quite a bit....and the cheaper ones on surface seem to not include things like albums and dvds etc.

Thanks for the price, very useful to know what others paid. I wonder if it depends on part of country as well?I have found lots of things seem to be more expensive down her in south east!!

I think it certainly is a case of getting what you pay for, but some photographers have flexible options too. For instance, ours has been doing it for 25 years but he also has a seperate day job so can afford to charge a bit less for his services. We have seen loads of his work and he has been recommended by people we know too. He also has a photos-only package, which we have chosen. All we get is literally the photos, and we have to compile them in an album ourselves, but this doesn't necessarily bother me as it's costing us a lot less and it might even be quite fun to do! Also some members of the family have said they'd like to buy us a wedding album, so this would work well with this.

It also depends how much coverage you want really. I'm not at all bothered about the getting ready photos, for instance. We are paying £700 in total and are getting coverage from the arrival at the venue to the first dance, so from about 1.30pm till about 9pm.

    Hope that helps

Edited to add - we also only get 40 photos for that price, but personally I think this is more than enough for the official ones.

To give you an idea, this is our photographer

    https://www.richardcorbett.co.uk/

He is exactly what we wanted and photos were a high priority for us too as they are one of the things you keep forever. Our package was the cheapest one he does. And for that we get him for 2 hours before ceremony until after the speeches. We get a digital album, 90 prints in a presentation box, 100 thankyou cards and 5 accessory albums.

I definitely think with photographers you get what you pay for, although I was like you - very very shocked when we saw prices.

Sorry, should have said, i am in Yorkshire so have no idea of prices 'darn saarf.' what i would say, is go and meet a few photographers, as how well i got on with htem was also a big thing in deciding who to use

I think it is true to say you get what you pay for. The more expensive photographers are normally more expensive simply because they are full time photographers who have to charge enough to pay the day to day bills rather than being 'weekend warriors' so they will probably be more experienced and it is more important for them to get it right because their livelyhoods depend on it!

There will always be exceptions to the rules though both ways so with a bit of hunting you could find an excellent photographer for £1000 or less and vice versa could get a shocker for more than this. Just make sure you shortlist a few photographers, meet 3-4 in person and ask to see plenty of their work including full wedding albums (not a portfolio of a mixture of their best work as this isn't a true representation of consistency).

We're paying £750 to get a printable CD with 50 edited photos (ie like you'd get in an album but on a CD so we can print them), but could have all the photos taken for an extra £250. We though it would be more special if we made our own album, plus we can put things like a sample invitation, menu etc so it has everything from the day in it.

We met 3 photographers, and end up going for the ones with most experience at our venue. It's also worth emailing and asking about cheaper packages, as the websites might just have very expensive deals but the photographer will actually do a cheaper package eg without album for less. We found the choice easier when we met the people and saw their work.

I saw your post, and maybe you'd like to consider me as a photographer?

I'm an experienced professional, and in general, most weddings I cover usually work out at about the £1000.00 mark, which will usually include a fully custom handmade wedding album, and the CD thrown in for free.

Most wedding photographers have a range of packages, so even the very best will have some flexibility. You need to think about what is important, apart from the photographer, the things that have an effect on price are:

    • time - how long the photogrpher is with you during the day - some photographers do not put a time limit on some fo their wedding photography packages
    • number of photographers - some photographic companies offer the services of two photographers so both bride and groom get to see what the other was up to in the morning - this is very popular at the moment.
    • Type of album - storybook albums generally take more time and effort to put together and will therfore cost more
    • Quality of album. There are a lot of different album suppliers out there. Everything from cheap and chearful to individual had designed and hand made
    • Size of album - bigger tends to be more expensive
    • Number of pages - most photographers will allow you to add pages to the album when you have seen your final selections. Some even let you take pages away and give a refund if you decide you want a smaller book.
    • Copies of digital files - is this important to you. Most photographers will offer this as an additional cost

I'm often accused of barging in with 2 left feet on these kind of posts but I read an excellent post on another wedding forum about this:

QUOTE "I must admit, to some degree I really do think you get what you pay for. BUT, that doesn't mean that paying as much as you can is right for everyone. I have looked at a LOT of wedding photos, and I have looked at a lot on this website. I think partly it depends on what you want from your photographs. Some photographers are essentially visual artists. As such, it doesn't matter who or what wedding they are taking, they will have a portfolio of shots with amazing lighting, mood and beauty. Other people take great pictures, but perhaps without that knowledge, skill or just creative eye to capture the light, composition, colour etc. So, you can have a nice set of photos of your wedding, but nothing that stands out as art. Some people aren't going to care if their photos are 'art' or not. But if you do, then you are going to pay for it. You are paying for a creative skill and talent, and it will always be a question of supply and demand. I am passionate about visual asthetics. I knew that I wanted a truely talented photograher. I actually feel like the person that we got was incredible value for money. He must have shot about 50 weddings last year. We paid £1950 for a full day and the digital high resolution files of the photos. The albums are on top of that. "QUOTE

I think what this person says sums it all up for me - the pricier togs will definately have that 'edge' artistically, over the cheaper ones. If you don't care about this and just want an adequate photographic record of your day then a mid-range photographer will most likely suit you better. Another thing to try and avoid is the comparison of 'what you get' from one photographer to another. Look at that photographer's skill not what's included. A huge bundle of albums, discs, and other extras will just be a big fat nothing if your photos are awful. I do also think (as suggested above) that you can sometimes negotiate with your photographer on certain inclusions to your package, especially if your wedding is on an 'off peak' day for him/her.

I could go on all day about how important I think your photographs are and how hard some togs work to ensure you have photographs to smile at, but then again, i'm a photographer and I would, wouldn't I??!!!!
