Hi

I have got the chance to part share a studio (rented) with 2 others, the studio is all equipt and has been up and running for some time, this came about as the 3rd photographer has got some personal problems and is moving away so cant carry on, so I have been asked if I would like to go in with the remaining 2, as I say its all up and running and is in quite a good (infact a very good city centre) location, customer wise, the share of rent is £110 per month inclusive,

does this sound about right and is it a good thing to do

Nickj where are you ?

It sounds like an interesing idea. I think if i'd have been offered something like that when I first started I would have definately considered it. Getting a place on your own is pricey and on top of that you have to buy equipment, so it sounds like an easy way to see if a studio works for you.

Are you going to all be separate photographers, or are you joining part of their company? If you're all separate, how does scheduling time in the studio work? does your share of the rent include equal share to using the premisis? Also is the studio branded towards one of the other photographers, or is it just generic?

You'd have to make sure you have an agreement detailling the specifics. I guess this would include who is responsible for upkeep of the building and equipment, whether you'd need your own insurance, specifics on how the place will be shared in terms of the length of time you can use the studio per month etc.

We are all seperate and there is a rota for studio time, although this is flexible if needs be, the studio is shared equally between the 3, as I said its been up and running for some time now (almost 2 years) with no problems and no rows lol, its not angled towards any one photographer, both of the remaining photographers have their own buisness and use the address of the studio for this, its simply called "the studio" no one has more right over it than anyone else, an agreement is drawn up, rather like a contract and it works very well, Im just starting out and would like to specialise in portraits, weddings etc and as you say its so expensive to start up, but all the equiptment is there waiting. I wouldnt be tied in for years, just 1 month upfront and i can move in asap, and give 1 months notice when i leave.

That sounds great to me then! I cant see any down sides at all. It's such a cheap price, believe me, I have a tiny studio, what with the rent and the equipment, I'd much rather take you're route sometimes!

Good luck with it, you'll have to post some of your studio portraits when you do them! Smiley smile

My goal is to do it as a hobby for the time being untill I finish my college course, then next year when my youngest son goes to full time school I want to be full time pro (alongside doing a HND 2 days a week)

Portrait photography is the way I want to go I love doing them,

Ive been to look at the studio today and its fab,all new equiptment, lights, backdrops etc big white room with office, toilet, kitchen and changing area Im so excited

They will even allow me to sub rent out the studio for slots if I want to, so theres another chance to make rent money up lol

the rent is all in, heating lighting insurence the lot and an online diary to allow us to see when its free.

Right bang in the Centre of Birminghams jewery quater with free parking after 6, and 3 mins away from a train station

Can you tell I said YES

Id be mad to turn it down

It sounds incredibly cheap. Do check that there aren't any hidden extras.

    And good luck.....

Wow, that sounds brilliant! Great deal ?

How is your course going? I'm a bit stagnated at the moment, I need more models and opportunities for my Time project and the light has been crap (except when I'm driving to work) so I haven't got any more nature shots. I have about 5 for my first panel, and I need at least 10. I've got some of my workbook done though.

    Hiya

Its going great thanks, the first deadline has been and gone (that was a day out/prisoner assignment) and I got a distiction for my porfolio and written assignment so I was well chuffed, but no sooner as I had relaxed from completing that I have now got the next deadline (interim 17th Dec,final 12 dec) so its full steam ahead for the next one, we had a choice of Still life or Portraiture and I have chosen the latter, (having the studio will make it so much easier too) and to continue with my "outside of the box" thinking Im going to do "Drag Queen, from naked to fully masked" and Im going to have a series of images of a Drag artist getting made up with a final portrait in all his/her glory dress and heels and all .

Im loving it more each day, but the homework plus the assignment plus the portfolio can get a bit much

Boz, you could do it the other way around, so whilst you shoot it in the order of getting ready, you present it in reverse order, starting with the final image - with the correct angles and light you could make him look like a woman, and then ultimately, a hard faced guy. so your first shot is just of the guy, say wearing a shirt. you need very different lighting to show both correctly, if you need help with that then shout - but generally, soft light for the female shot and very hard light for the guy shot. if you need a set up i can run you through a few things.
