Photographers-help needed

neromute, 12 May, 2008 at 22:29 Posted on Planning 0 5

Hi I got married in August and the photographer to cut a long story short has ceased all contact with us. We have managed to get a very low res disk of the photos but they are completely unedited. We simply can not get in contact with him regularly( we called his mum tonight and he is completely broke!) and he has taken our money and we have no album- he as not cheap either. I am so upset about the prospect of no album. Anyway my question is - we wanted a graphi studio album, I was wondering if photographer take on other photographers work, edit the photogrpahs and send them to Graphi studio?? Is this a possibility- obviously we would need a high res disk

This is a problem. Few photographers would be willing to touch this for several reasons. One is that they would be working with anothersimages and any shortcomings therein, second is that by working on the images, without permission they would be in breach of legal copyright.

I know of a photographer who undertook something quite similar and although he did a good job with average images, he still got slated on this forum for the other photographers work.

Can you supply more detail about the original photographer? Do this by PM if preferable to avoid it being in open discussion. I will try to help as much as possible.

As Peter has said it is very unlikely you will get a photographer to do what you are asking. Regardless of the other photographers behaviour there are copyright laws that prevent this being done legally and with low res images even if it were legal you will not get decent album prints.

I would be looking to get legal advice - presumably you have a written contract stating what you paid and what you should have received? It sounds very unprofessional you are having to contact him via his Mum. Is he a Member of any of the Professional bodies - SWPP, MPA, BIPP or BPPA as they all have a code of conduct. If he is a Member you could perhaps contact them for advice?

Hi I am sorry to hear about the problems with your photographer, but I agree with what Peter & BDP have said.

Presumably you have a contract? If so then you should get some legal advice (plenty of solicitors give free 1hr interviews to get you started), you might also want to look at the small claims route.

As for getting a new album, low res images would not be good enough to make a Graphi album. Unless you could get a hi res CD from him, with a signed release allowing another photographer to produce the album I am not sure any photographers would take this on.

This is possible and we have done it in the past to help people out, but as has been said, you have to be carefull to understand what contracts are in place. We were called in when a photographer was taken to court for failing to deliver an album. The Court awarded a fine and released the images to the B&G. They then approched us and we produced an album. It is not an ideal situation, but people such as this give the industry a bad name and we need to do what we can to help, if possible. You should also be aware that the quality of images may be very low if you only have low res files. If you really want to do this then you should talk to the photographer and ask for a release of the high resolution imgaes and written permission to go ahead and get a third party to produce an album - but don't give up your right to have him produce what he promised at some time in the future when his finances are better.

Sorry to hear your problems, the unfortunate truth is that this sort of thing seems to be on the increase, as digital technology has made a lot of people simple think they are photographers. Other brides to be should consider it a warning to only book with experienced professionals.

As others have said, there would be be the issues with both not having high res images and copyright. There really should be no reason why the photographer cannot supply you these as an absolute minimum.

If you can obtain these then there is no reason why I cannnot assemble you a book. I actually use traditional bookbinders and get the books all handmade, they are nicer and possibly cheaper than graphi studio, and can be completely made to your sepcification.

I once had a customer in the past, whose photographer completely disappeared (in fact he even disappeared halfway through the wedding never to return!) She supplied me loads of photos, taken from loads of different cameras, i.e friends and family. I adjusted and balanced them all, and created her a book from them.

    So it can be done.

Providing you can obtain usage rights I know of several photographers who will build a graphi album for you, however most will do so on the clear understanding that they are not responsible for image quality as they are not in control of that.

This time of year you may struggle as it's getting into the silly season again, come February and it's usually much quieter for most of us.
