photography (what do you think )

anglefish, 12 August, 2009 at 19:56 Posted on Planning 0 21

Hey everyone,

we have been looking at various photographers and are finding that they are about £1000 pounds which we appriciate as they do loads of work, but we have been thinking as we are trying to keep costs down about having family take photos instead we have a few people that are fairly good with a camera.

also i have seen online that you can get the books made yourselfs now.

what do people think about this idea would anyone else do it ????/

Personally i wouldnt want any friends or family doing the photography because id want them to enjoy the day but i would also worry they would be crap!?

you can get photographers alot cheaper than £1,000

some photographers offer a service where they just take the pics and give you them on a CD and then you are free to go print them yourself and make your own albulm - this is a much cheaper option as obviously it invloves alot less work for them.

I agree with Shoegal. I personally wouldn't want family/friends taking photos as I would want them to enjoy the day too and not have that pressure as well as worrying that they wouldn't be good enough. The photos that family and friends have taken of our wedding are lovely but am looking forward to the profressional ones more. They know what they are doing.

You can get a photographer a lot cheaper than £1000 and like SG said, get the photos on a disc and you can do what you want with them. It might be worth contacting photographers, say what your budget is and see what kind of deal they can make you.

I would suggest a digital only package. Where abouts are you, people may have recommendations for you?

If you're going to have your own books made, I'd suggest www.blurb.com we used them and they're fantastic. Excellent quality and not expensive. Online reviews of them by professional photographers are fab. You download the free software and can decide on the layout of the book, which is fun in itself!

Remember the photos will be one of the few lasting bits of the wedding ... something to show your kids & grandkids etc - I would try to cut down on other areas first and as others have said go for a digital only package too.

We asked a friend to do the photos (he is a pro photographer but not for weddings) and asked all the guests to send us their pics too on CD, I then made a photo book from them! It was lovely as I have made sure that I have a picture of each of the guests in it which makes it really special!

I was really pleased with the result - my photo book is honestly better than my friends who paid well over £1000 for it! Although some of her photos are so stunning! If we could have afforded it I would have def had a pro photographer, but on our budget this was a great option!

To be honest it depends on how important the photo's are to you if it is worth paying a premium price to have them taken professionally.

For some people they aren't that fussed and then friends and relatives is fine. Given good weather outside you can often get a good snap if you have a good camera with relatively little skill or knowledge. Not up to pro standards but decent. It's when the weather isn't great, your inside or need groups arranging and creativity that pro's come into their own and can create stunning images others just can't match, no matter what cameras they have.

I guess the key thing is just not to expect the photo's friends and family take to be as good as a professionals and understand that the albums you can do yourself are usually nowhere near as good as those professionals can supply because the best suppliers usually only deal with pro's direct.

I would suggest if photo's are important to you and you can afford it, hire a pro, if not use friends and relatives, just don't expect too much from them. Remember a camera is just a tool, I can buy the best trainers in the world but I'll never be able to outrun linford christie!

My auntie got married a year ago and had my cousin's husband take the photos for her. He's by no means a photographer, wouldn't even describe himself as amateur! The photo's came out ok, but tbh you could tell they weren't professional.

Another example is Ruth (HIB) who took some fantastic photos at a wedding earlier this year - but she works with weddings day in day out so had that advantage.

It really depends on how good your friend is. Also depends on how much of the wedding you/they mind missing.

My package is just under £1000 and I just get the disc of photos. I'll be using blurb to create some coffee table albums.

You can get a photographer for less than £1000, although if you are peak season on a Saturday it's obviously more difficult.

I'd echo the advice to think about what's really important to you.

If you're the sort of person who will flick through the photos once then stick them away in a drawer to be forgotten, then it may well make sense to either hire a very low-end photographer or rely on friends.

If, on the other hand, you'll enjoy sharing the photos with all your friends, and will look at the album for years to come, then it may make more sense to compromise on a few of the optional extras, or the very transient things that will be forgotten by the following week, and invest more on the one aspect of your wedding that will last forever.

Can I ask, people who have said that you can get photographers for much less than £1000, can anyone help me find one?! I am really struggling to find many that charge even close to £1000, I want professional pics but can't afford as much as I am being quoted ☹️ I am probably looking in the wrong places so does anyone please have any tips or recommendations?

I am in Newcastle upon Tyne, is not always true that things are cheaper up North, ha ha!
