Piece of string question - average staff turnover rates

NumbNuts, 15 July, 2008 at 14:57 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

We're looking to employ a new team and am trying to work out the costs of recruiting and training vs getting an external company to provide the staff and do all the training.

We are trying to "guesstimate" what an average turnover rate is for retraining costs? Does anyone have an average figure for this, or is there one?

Unfortunately it's something we've never done before so have no previous figures, and the nearest job around is undertaken y volunteers, who are never taken off the books as it were

I guess it would depend on the industry and specialism. Sales industries typically have very high staff turnover however if you are in an area that people want to work in then they will stay.

(Not very helpful I know but am trying to contribute more!)

It's not sales, its kind of specialised trainers (sorry for the vagueness).

In my company (large utility with relatively low moral atm) predicted turnover rate is 10% with resignation turnever rate of 7%.

We got up to 15% at one stage, which raised a few eyebrows. I think we're back down at about 6% now but we've made the decision to stop using agencies and bring recruitment in house.

If it's quite specialised I'd have guessed that the turnover would be quite low, as there'd be fewer options for people looking to move onto (ie less likely to see a similar better offer elsewhere).

It does vary so much though - as an example I can think of the nursery where my children go. Traditionally nurseries have quite high staff turnover, as the pay is low and then staff tend to be young and go on to other things or have their own children and leave etc. But where my kids are the turnover is negligible, seriously in 4 years I've known that place I can think of only one person who went on maternity leave and didn't come back, and there are people there with no children, children, and grandchildren. It's one of the reasons I love it. Anyway, that's all by-the-by, what I mean is, turnover is lower if the place is a good place to work. Only you know that!
