Placenames - help pls!

Kooks, 15 July, 2011 at 10:50 Posted on Planning 0 13

I've bought some gorgeous tags from Etsy to use as our place names but not sure how to print the names onto them? They're too small for a printer and my handwriting is too messy to write.

Does anyone have any experience of rubber stamping names? Is it fiddly or do-able? Can't imagine how they would look. Or any other ideas?

Thanks!

Do you know anyone who does calligraphy as a hobby? Or an elderly relative who has fancy writing? Perhaps try asking in a local art/craft shop if they know anyone who buys calligraphy stuff that might be interested in doing it for you (or there might even have some cards up with people offering such services).

When you say tags I'm guessing they're brown, and a small printed label would look out of place?

Personally I wouldn't recommend rubber stamping. It'll be really difficult to get the letters aligned and spaced properly.

Either that, or start practising writing neater Smiley smile

Have you got a photo of the tags to show us?

Agree with AJ that stamping individual letters on will be fiddly... but on the other hand you might like the 'wobbly', hand-done sort of look IYSWIM. I had a quick google for you but this was all I could find:

So although they're not perfectly lined up, that might be the effect you're going for, but I don't know if that fits with your theme!

    Oooh, also found this:

where again it's not perfectly spaced and aligned but IMO that adds to the pretty effect rather than looking 'wrong'.

Whilst fiddly, for our favour tags I printed them on to parchament paper and cut and stuck. It took a while but looked good.

Hmm, what about a stencil? The old skool plastic alphabet sort? They come in different fonts including cursive ones if you don't want anything too primary school?

They're cream so a label would look odd. Here's a pic

    Gees - that's huge. Sorry!

Stencil is not a bad idea though I don't mind the slighty wonky look!

RaeF - sorry to be dim but how did you do yours exactly?

I had a similar problem with butterfly shaped place names that I couldnt directly print names onto. I printed the names on the computer on paper (use a cream as close to the place name colour, or a contrasting colour for effect), then cut out with crimping/decorative scissors. The crimping scissors meant that names of different sizes and any mistakes in cutting werent seen as they would be with straight scissors.

I then glued the names on with a dab of craft glue to the place names. I tried hand writing the names in a glitter, calligraphy pen, but the printed ones looked much better & easier to read. I wouldnt both using a stencil when this method is so much quicker & neater.

I am doing this- rubber stamping letters for names. It goes with our theme. The stamps look like an old fashioned typewriter font. I can't flash as I am work, but love how they look.

I played around with sizing on normal paper and then printed what I wanted onto parchment paper (I wrote the names but did a design with our initials on the other side which is what I used this for). Cut the paper into individual names (in your case), mounted that onto pieces of card to create a border then stuck that on to the tags.

Here's a little Paint pic to try and illustrate what I mean - I'm not sure if it will work with your tags though as they have a design on them.

Thanks everyone, I had thought about clear stickers but think I might get some stamps and give that a go first, if I struggle with that then will try some of the other suggestions!

    And def only first names!!
