Plain wedding make up just isn't me... help?

lady_lyla, 11 March, 2012 at 14:24 Posted on Planning 0 26

Ok, so I know everyone says go for timeless styled make up so your photos don't age badly, but every make up artist I find just does plain style make up.

I wear quite heavy eye make up (lots of black eyeliner but not goth style, I just mean I do liquid flicks and then line my whole eye with liner...) all of the time . I always have the same amount of make up during the day or if I'm going out, and I just wouldn't look or feel like me without it...

Do you think this would look too much on the photos, and how do I chose an artist with bridal experience, based on the kind of make up i want?

I'm tempted just to do it myself, but know it won't last as long as a pro!

When you have your trial, if they keep things too plain, tell them. And keep telling them until they get to the level you're after. If you explain how you like to wear your make up they should listen to you, but keep an open mind to their suggestions about what may also suit you. Just make sure you make it clear if you hate their suggestions after they tried them!

I've just done a trial this morning for a bride who wanted just that look. Most of the people that come to me want the very glamorous look, I hardly ever do natural looks and there is no set way as to have your makeup. It should be whatever suits you.

I would gather some pics of the looks you like and then you'll have them to show your MUA.

Maybe you could show some photos to the make up artists before you book them and then if they're not happy doing that style they can tell you then rather than going to the expense of a trial.

SNAP! i wear full a full face everyday, eye liner, liquid eye liner, eye shaddow and as much mascara as my lashes can hold! and this is the way i have always looked since 15 regardless of if its the school run or a night out so i don't really want someone who's idea of a bridal makeup is a coral coloured shaddow with 2 coats of mascara!!!

I have realised that im going to have to pay the extra for someone that i want, i have googled glamour make-up in my area (sorry im in hants so nowhere near you) and the ones that look like what im looking for have experience in t.v and fashion shoots and bridal is just something elsethat they do rather than just being for bridal. ive exsepted that my make up will be £200+ and maybe in 20 years il look in horror at the amount of slap i wear now but feeling good walking down the isle is whats the most important to me now.

Yes! I can highly recommend Illumasque (sp?) from Selfridges in Manchester. Our daughter is exactly the same in that she didn't want the country rose look as she wears make up all the time (takes after me LOL!) The lady who did hers was fantastic. She said that you lose roughly 40% of the colour of make up in photos so go for more rather than less. Alex had loads of trials and hated them all until she found this company. I'm almost sure it cost £80 Here's a flash for you:-

    This was the trial:-

    And on the day:-

Personally i would do it yourself! I am so fussy with my make up (mainly mascara) and i have had make overs in the past and they NEVER put enough mascara on for me and i know i wont feel comfortable without so i am going to save money and do it myself! at the end of the day your OH is marrying you and although you want to look extra special on your wedding day you still want it to reflect you and your personality!
I dont want to feel awkward on my wedding day telling the make up artist to put more mascara on when i could just do it myself!

    Smiley smile x

Hey Lyla, I think if you go for a lesson and buy the right make up then there's no reason it couldn't last the same time as a pro doing it. Plus you have time to experiment and try it out. I went to Shu Uemura for a wee lesson the other day and they had some beautiful primers and illuminescents (sp?) that made my skin glow and the girl who did my face does wedding make up using these products. I've opted for doing my own for these control issues and I'll ask my mum to carry a few bits to let me touch up later in the day.

I do really want to but I'm worried about it not lasting (and being too champagne filled to re-apply in the evening haha)

Could you not do it your self? then you have it exactly how you want, havent spent loads on trials or the wedding & less stress for you.

i'm lucky my CBM is doing mine as she used to work on the dior counter in boots.

In which case you'll be too champagne filled to care about your make up anyhoo!! ? If I were you I'd spend the money on good make up rather than a make up artist as you get to keep all the goodies in the months that follow!

I wear MAC, had a trail with a MAC artist and was so disapointed I cried once she left, I was expecting to look amazing!!!

So after being robbed £40 for the trial there was no way I was spending any further money it, so just doing it myself, cause personally I dont think I do a bad job, ha.

    Hi Lyla,

I'm a bit likeyou except my day to day makeup is more rocky and smudgy but still wear quite heavy eye makeup but not foundation etc day to day.

Had my trial on Saturday and the artist I am using also does TV and photo work in addition to bridal.

She said that most brides actually don't want natural makeup. She asked loads of questions about what I wanted and what I usually wear etc. We discussed different options and how to get what I want while minimisng the dating issues with photos if you go for a fashionable type look.

Anyway, I think my hair andmakeup will be about £185 with her, including trial of both and false lashes. So it is doable!

I personally wouldn't do it myself as I am just not sjkilled with all the different products and tehniques. I would also suggest that actually one of the important things is the foundation asopects of your makeup as this can make or break your photo's. if you are not experienced at it then I would say you are better finding an artists, but thats just my opinion.

You may find more luck inf inding someone you feel comfortable with by looking for film and TV and photo artists rather than just bridal artists - they will also have a much wider portfolio for you to look at.

Don't forget, any artist worth their salt should be able to do what you want. Take the time to at least callthem and have a chat about what yu want, that will help you judge whether they understand your needs. Amnd as others have said you could take photo'sd of your day to day make up for them to work with.

I am another who votes for the do it yourself route if you have the time on the day. I am VERY fussy with make-up and have never liked it when it's been done for me. I'm not a make-up artist but due to my fussiness, I have done the make-up for several of my friends on their wedding day. On one of those, I had nine of the bridal party to do and not one of their make-up's had slipped by the end of the evening do.

When i did their make-up I used a primer first of all and left it a couple of minutes before applying any make-up. The concealer I swear by is Maybelline 24 hour stay and when this is applied with a brush it literally doesn't budge. I don't usually wear foundation but Lily Lolo mineral powder although for them i used Estee Lauder double wear mixed with Barbara Daly facelift foundation (more like a tinted moisturiser) and then set with Minieral finishing powder. I've heard that Estee Lauder Double Wear can cause ghost face in photo's but I've never experienced it, whether it's because I mix it with something else I'm not sure. I had read reviews to try Dior Forever and also Airflash but I don't like either of them. I've been wearing the Forever to work for about the past week and no matter how I apply it (fingers, brush, sponge etc) it is patchy by the end of the day.

For eye make-up Urban Decay primer potion is excellent. I don't generally have a problem with eye make-up slipping anyway but my friend does and when she uses this her make-up does not shift at all. I find Estee Lauder eyeshadow is pretty long lasting as is Nars. Although i love the selection of colours Mac do, they've never made my heart sing! Collection 2000 eyeshadow is also fairly long lasting.

To keep your lipstick sticking dab a liquid concealer lightly on your lips beforehand, leave to set and then apply lipstick with a brush. You can also colour the lips firstly with lipliner and then blot before applying the lipstick.

For blusher I love Mac and Nars and find them longlasting anyway but you could use a cream blusher first and then a powder blusher of the same shade on top for extra longevity.

Lastly, Urban Decay do a setting spray for extra peace of mind. I have it but very rarely use it as I find as long as you have a good base, your make-up shouldn't go anywhere or need re-applying other than a slick of gloss.

    Phew, i wrote an essay!

Oooooo Babyb that's lots of good tips! The instyle 2012 beauty awards have not long been announced so I've been trailing through the makeup pages and plan on buying more than a few things. The products are all voted for by a huge panel of professional make up artists.

Instead if going for big black smoky eyes what about quite a thick line of liquid on your top lid that leads to a classy flick? And a nice classical red lippy if thats still too plain? You can still have bold makeup but keep it classy too Smiley smile x

My eyes always have the liquid liner, but with liner underneath too (I've probably made it sound more dramatic than it is hahaha)
