Planning a wedding in a week...is this possible??

LilMissBusyBride, 13 May, 2012 at 18:21 Posted on Planning 0 17

Hi all,

My FI and I both work exceptionally long hours, including weekends (meant to be working now but having a break ;-)). We have been engaged since last summer and are getting married next summer. We have so far booked our venues, chosen colour schemes, and chosen bridesmaids n ushers. We have had no time to organise anything else and I cant see that changing in the next year. Therefore not really sure how/when to plan a wedding. We have decided to book a week off from work soon and spend the week planning the whole thing and making any extras we want. From spending my fleeting spare time on here I think I have a really good idea of what I want and so could spend the time productively rather than looking for inspiration. Also, I could do a lot of it on the internet and so I am happy to spend LONG hours on it during that week as not constrained to working hrs with the net. Also, I am thinking of asking friends round to have diy parties to help with invitations etc. Is this possible?? Everyone I have told this idea to looks at me like Im crazy but I'm not sure I have a lot of choice. Has anyone done this? Can anyone think of a logical order of events in the week? I was thinking of sorting the dress before this week as it might influence the feel of the rest of the plans? Thank you for your help!

Thanks! I think I might need to spend a few days a month or so before getting all the bits and bobs. Made me laugh about the 2 months on the invitations...as my FI would love the chance to 'reflect' like that whereas I'm more a bull in a china shop!

Perhaps if you make a list of everything that needs doing and assign certain tasks to certain days (I am picturing a spreadsheet with colour coding - I'm a bit sad like that) and delegrate tasks to people then it would help to make sure you get everything done.

    Hi hun,

depending where you are based i may be able to help with all the decor.

we are a very reasonably priced venue decor company based in the midlands but will travel for fuel.

we take care of the whole lot... chair covers, centrepieces, favours, place cards, table plans and many more.

I am also a wedding planner so if you like i can help out with a lot more and will end up saving you money in the long run as i know a lot of cheaper suppliers.

    Thanks,

    Layna

Some things will be possible in that week, but liasing with suppliers and arranging meetings will be difficult.

I would personally get a list of things you need doing, prioritise in your order of importance - bearing in mind some things need arranging well in advance.

The invites don't need to be done for some time, but I guess you need a design and wording.

If time is your biggest problem, why not work with a supplier to produce your design, and then they can produce the bulk versions you need?

I would say, use your suppliers as much as possible. The good ones will have the experience and contacts to help.
We ran out of time for our Wedding, laminating "album covers" for table names about 2 days before the Wedding. So.. I know its hard work!

If you do decide to book the entire week off - make sure you have clear plans before the week -so suppliers are able to meet, you've any materials you need. All of this can easily burn 1 or 2 days off your week, and many suppliers will be busy at weekends, so not easily able to meet.

Great plans. I was planning on sourcing particular suppliers (but might need to do it without spending too much time) and arranging the meeting ahead of the week so I can make sure they are available. Thanks for the offer of wedding planning services but I would really like to do it myself, BUT I might be contacting you after the week off if my plan fails ;-)

You can source a lot of suppliers here on hitched. I did a lot of this on the bus to and from work with very helpful suggestions from fellow hitchers that led to my hair and make up ladies and my favours etc all coming from forum suggestions and then email bookings. But forward planning really is the key for you to make the most of your week. You will have to order all your making components in advance to ensure its all there when you need it. Me and my OH also struggled with time, the Main ones being meeting other people. The things that may mess up your timings are going to meet with: dress alterations, photographer, venue for day schedule, catering, florists and hair makes up trials. All of there people have there own schedules and you'll need to negotiate well in advance if you want to meet all of them in your one week off. I think its going to depend on how flexible these people are and how much warning you can give them of the way you are working. Good luck.

The short, simple answer is, yes, you can, but it will take a leap of faith!

I personally would speak to your venue and say I want this, this, this and this... who do you recommend?

Most venues take their recommended suppliers very seriously, and on the whole, they all know each other, it should make the whole process fairly simple, but, as I said, it will take a leap of faith!

    Hi,

Thanks for this. My current plan is

    a) Meet with wedding ccordinator and a month/6 weks in advance of week off and explain plan and also ask for recommended suppliers. Also ask all the teeny qs e.g. do chairs have pokey up ends so I can hang little signs to mark out cahirs for bridal party etc.

    b) Think of what I want for STDs and invitations and buy the bits in advance of the week.

    c) A month before week off book to see the recommended suppliers and have a list of back up suppliers in case I dont like the first ones.

    d) Do as much as I can on the net and Internet in that week out of work day hrs n keep days free for meeting suppliers, going to shops etc.

    e) Try and get wedding dress in advance of this week if at all poss so I know feel of the day.

    f) Continue to pop on here regularly as its really helped me pinpoint exactly what I need to do and also given me lots of fab ideas without me having to think vey much.

Any other ideas majorly appreciated xxx

I'd say it is possible yes. As said above you need a structured plan of what needs to be done on which day and devote that week to your wedding. I wish you the very best of luck with your one week wedding! I cant wait to hear how you get on with it. Please keep us updated!

    xx

Just wanted to give you an update on this and thanks all those for their advice. 6 days into my week of planning. This week I've managed to arrange my dress, BM dresses, photographer, music, wedding rings, florist, cake and chocolate fountain. Hoping to get invites done Saturday but not sure. It has completely exhausted me and my FI, not had a good night sleep all week! But at least I know it's almost possible. All the other bits can be left until more leave from work in Xmas and Spring. Really pleased with us :-)

Well done, you have really stuck to your plan and gotten so much done.

Try and get a day to just chill and relax over the weekend, and celebrate the achievements of the week with H2B.

    xx
