I am looking for some help - i would like to get a plant for my living area but not sure what to get

it would need to be both cat and child friendly - also the living area doesn't get direct sunlight.

The only plant I ever managed to keep alive was a Christmas Cactus, so I'm not really in a position to give great advice.

Cheese plants are pretty easy to look after - is that the sort of thing you mean? I take it that mean you mean "not poisonous" when you say child/cat friendly? I would imagine they'll both knock it over a few times when you first get it.

Christmas cacti aren't prickly ones, they are succulents (fleshy leaves). They might need a bit more light than you have though?

You could get a peace lily, they like it shady and aren't poisonous. Mine has had the leaves pulled about a bit by my daughter but is still fine.

Orchids are very easy to look after (Moth orchids, phaeleonopsis orchids in particular)

They just like a warm room, out of direct sun (but fairly bright) and watering once a week.

Mine flower for months at a time!
