Plea re swine flu

Rache, 16 July, 2009 at 10:53 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 10

Can everyone who doesn't already have one, please buy a thermometer? I like the Braun Thermoscan which is about £30 on Amazon at the moment. It makes it really difficult to assess swine flu over the phone when ppl say "dunno, I felt a bit hot" when I ask them what their temperature is. If your temp is Smiley heart8.0 degrees it's unlikely to be swine flu. If it's over 38.0 it might be, so check your symptoms on http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/Sat/Topics/WizardStepOne.aspx?Host=Nhsd&SyndicationPartnerGuid=d19370ea-a100-407d-9695-b73407f701c7&TopicGuid=8c903315-a302-412a-bfae-9cb576d4b4cd and call NHSDirect is you think it might be. The Swine Flu Information line is 0800 1 513 513 but we prefer you to use the online version if you have Qs /conditions/swine-flu/

Thanks all

Excellent advice! i went and got one yesterday for this very reason - after being told to take my slightly warm and achy necked boy home

his temp was totally normal and it was very reassuring because i could easily have worked myself into a frenzy

i have to say i just got one of the cheapy stick it under your tongue jobbies - are they ok?

Thanks for the information, this advice was given on BBC Breakfast earlier in the week and I'd planned to get one at lunchtime. I guess it's something useful to have in house anyway.

I have a question, is it possible to have a pretty low base temperature and therefore what is a 'normal' temp in someone else could be high in me? I'm not sure if my thermometer is dodgy but even when I'm sure I have a temp it never goes over 38, and the baseline for me seems to be 36-36.5 - is this possible/likely? Not SF related as I feel fine at the moment, just a general pondering! I might buy myself a better thermometer anyway, it's a digital but only a pretty cheap Lloyds one and I'm just never sure it's working right!

    Great advice Rache, thanks.

I made myself panic a bit in early pregnancy as I thought I was running a temp, but when I actually checked with a thermometer, it was fine.

Funnily enough I ordered one online yesterday. I now feel justified in doing so and much less neurotic than H made me feel, thank you ?

It was just a cheap digital one (around a fiver) so I hope that will do the trick.

Great advice - we have one for the children and 2 of us are full of cold. I'm boiling and sweating buckets but my temp hasn't gone over 36.9 so I haven't had to bug my doctors.

Rache if its SF is the high temp maintained? The baby spiked at over 38 but it came down straight away and he has been fine since. The symptoms for SF say 'rapid onset high temp' but doesn't say if it stays high. I just wanted to clarify for next time (not sure that makes sense - my brain has been replaced by cotton wool...) I'm happy he just has a cold now as his temp was on Friday night.

We have a Braun ear one - that and the dustbuster have been our two best purchases since having children.

I have one luckily. It it saved me from panicking last night/today when I came down with a horrible sore throat, achey and generally groggy, but temp has been normal.

Rache, what's the current advice re Swine Flu? My bro's had a temp of 39.5 and diarrhoea and stomach cramps since Friday. Mum's very worried about him. His fever has now passed, but he still has the other symptoms. He's 28 and otherwise fit and healthy...is it worth troubling the GP at this no doubt busy time for you all?

    Thanks.
