It's all sterling. You don't have to get anything changed.

There is Scottish money, yes, as well as Bank of England notes. Like we have in Norn Iron. You should be able to spend it in Welsh Wales, but it might be easier to just deposit any loeft over into your bank account.

One word of warning. Dont take money out of a clydesdale bank unless you are going to spend it, try to avoid bringing CB notes back as they are a bugger to get rid of.

No harm in asking on here! Or at least, not yet! ?

Yes, there are Scottish notes, from my somewhat dodgy memory, the Royal Bank of Scotland and the Bank of Scotland print notes. I'm not sure about coins. You'll be fine with sterling in Edinburgh, but you won't be able to use Scottish money back home. A good excuse to buy shot or two of Glenmorangie before you leave if you have any Scottish notes on your last day. ?

Yes we do print our own banknotes but we do take Bank of England ones too!

If I were yuo though I'd try and get rid of all the Scottish notes up here as sometimes you can have problems you can have problems using them over the border ?

I've just got back from Edinburgh!! You can use English notes or Scottish notes up there and down here, both are legal tender in Wales England and Scotland. No seperate coins for Scotland though (I don't think).

Best bit of our trip was a tour of the Royal Yacht Britannia, really good!! You can get there by no 35 bus - lovely shopping centre there too (so you won't need to bring any Scottish notes home ?)

It was the first time I had been. OH kept it secret where we were going. I still didn't know after we had checked in at Birmingham airport ?

Britannia was fantastic, Botannical Gardens were pleasant, but it was a bit warmer then. I wouldn't bother with Dynamic Earth, unless you have the children with you. OH wanted to go, but it was more aimed at school children.

Hope you have a great time

Your question has already been answered, but I just wanted to say how unfair it is that us kind Scots folk accept English notes, yet try to use a Scottish note in England and you get looked at like you just printed it at home and told it's no good! ☹️!]

London is the worst for it, I'm dead stubborn and tell them it's all I have, is legal tender (Sterling) and they can take it or leave it. Never had to leave my shopping behind yet! ? To be honest though, it's not worth the hassle, so just do lots of shopping on your last day to use up any notes!

Not sure if they're Scotland specific or not, but there are £1 coins with the Forth Rail bridge on them, so maybe we have our own coins too? No one in England will notice those though!

Have a nice trip, hope the weather cheers up, it was lashing down this morning! ☹️

I think the point is that technically, Scottish notes are not actually legal tender south of the border. I'm sure I read this somewhere once researching it.

Cariad, try to get rid of your Scottish notes before you fly back. If you need cash for when you get home, the cashpoint which is just to the left as you go through Edinburgh Airport security (next to the travelex desk by gate 5) issues English notes. I always get mine from there when travelling with work. There are cashpoints before security too but I don't know if they give out English notes.

FigJam, it's not actually 'legal tender' in England though, that's the problem. ? only BoE otes are technically LT in England. However, scottish notes don't actually need to be 'legal tender' (a v narrow contractual term in the law of debt) so long as they are widely accepted. Beacsue they are widely accepted, they ought to be 'acceptable' as settlement for a debt..

Whenever we visit the PILs in Glasgow H deliberately takes out as much Scottish cash as he can, and then gets ready to fight us "poncy southerners" if anyone refuses to take it [:I]

Hmmm... I was always told that as they were "Sterling", they were legal tender. It always seems such a faff to have to worry about having the "right" notes when it's the same currency!

Some of the new Clydesdale ones are very strange, look like euros rather than pounds! Nice bright colours though. ?

We have the same issue with Norn Iron money. To be fair, some of it looks a bit, Monopoly, esp the plastic fivers.

I agree, as usual, with Lou, though - only BoE money is legal tender in England, the Scottish and NI money are promisery notes between the banks specific to those countries or something. But, if you get shirty enough, most places will take them. As I said earlier, it's easier just to deposit them in your own account.

The coins are all BoE btw.

I find that Scottish notes are accepted more in northern England (not so far from the border, I suppose) and I've had them accepted without question in Cornwall and Norn Iron (fellow celts). London is by far and away the worst but half the time that's because the person taking the money isn't a UK national. I tend to pay them into my bank account because I can't be bothered with the hassle.

My apologies, must have been too excited at seeing lots of £50 notes (had cash in hand to buy a car recently, so didn't see it for long!) as well as the funky colours!

Funny you should say that Hoobs...? Apparently BoE fifties are the easiest to forge, so many 'high cash turnover' outlets simply won't accept them up here, and as a consumer, I would never accept one as change or payment for anything up here. (not that I'm in the habit of getting small change in the shape of fifty squid notes). ?

Don't forget your passport. You'll need that too in addition to special Scottish money.

Also, have you made sure you've had all the necessary innoculations?

Pound notes are still in circulation up here. You don't see many of them any more, but very occasionally one will pop up. We had one sitting in our till for weeks on end before we finally remembered to use it for change.
