Please help me to reduce my choice of hymns - which ones do you know?

pink_tink, 6 August, 2011 at 18:54 Posted on Planning 0 12

We are definitely having Jerusalem but then I have lots of other favourites. Please could you choose your 2 favourite hymns from this list. Please could you also tell me if you know them as I really want to choose ones that other people can sing and not just me!

For the Beauty of the Earth (I love this one but I don`t know if it is very well known)

Lord of all Hopefulness

Be Still for the Presence of the Lord

Love Divine all loves Excelling.

Thank you

The two I know best off that list are For the Beauty of the Earth and Love Divine - whether I can sing them or not is a different matter! ?

I do know Lord of all Hopefulness and Be Still, but not as well.

Neither of us know "for the beauty of the earth", my b2b doesn's know "be still" but I do. The rest we both know.

"Lord of all hopefulness" is one many of us will remember from school so that may be helpful - although I might be biased as we chose that for one of our musical guests who insisted on singing us something at one point during the day (it'll be in the middle of the speeches to break them up a little).

I know all of them extremely well. But then, I am in a church choir.

Favourite two for a wedding, Love divine and For the beauty of the earth.

Last year we sang "Jerusalem " more than any other hymn, this year it is "Amazing Grace" Fashions in hymns?

As a non churchgoers views I dont know any of them...may be worth consdiering having hymns that are somewhat more in popular culture if the majority of your guests are non church goers- just a thought?

At a wedding a few weeks back they had Amazing Grace (is also thier daugthers name) and All things bright and beautiful, at least people knew the tune even if not the words?

    just a thought?

For the Beauty of the Earth is quite stunning and everyone in the congregation will love it by the end of verse one!

I'm a non church goer but I do know Love Divine and Lord of all Hopefulness. Well, I know the tunes and could follow the words - quite like them as well.

Jerusalem will be amazing if everyone gets stuck in and booms it out.

I know all of them - mostly from schooldays. Love Divine has 2 main versions (there are more as well) Blaenwern and Stainer are the most usual ones - make sure you get the one you want! For the Beauty of the Earth is nice, but I prefer the John Rutter choral setting - an option for the signing of the register if you have a choir - there's also a nice choral version of All Things Bright and Beautiful by him as well - sung loads at school as our head of music had a bit of a thing for Rutter music!

I'd probably pick Love Divine (either version) although I'm going for the Stainer one as that's the one we did at school and either Be Still or Lord of All Hopefullness for the other one. The one issue with Be Still is that although the tune is easy, the timing is a bit fiddly if you've not sung it before, but I really like it.

I love Be Still, and I would hope that enough people know it. Love divine is the other one I'd pick, and I prefer the Stainer version. You can actually also sing it to the tune of Beethoven's 9th symphony (Ode to Joy) which works surprisingly well!

I can't stand the congregational version of For the Beauty of the Earth - much prefer the Rutter, but unless you have a choir that's not really an option.
