Please Help re Aerials and Digital TV

HappyGirl, 29 January, 2009 at 08:19 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

I think I am just thick or totally behind in technology ?

We are looking at buying a new portable tv and I have found one with freeview installed in the tv - which sounds great.

We only have one other telly which we have fixed up to sky.

Now I thought it would be lovely to have this telly so that LO can watch Cbeebies and we can watch the main telly.

I have checked the Freeview site and it says we get reception with our 'existing roof aerial'.

Now we don't have a roof aerial as such - the only aerial we have is the satellite dish for the sky.

Is this what they mean - will the freeview come through that? or do we need to buy an aerial - and if so what is an aerial?

This sounds really thick but I am not really sure what they mean.

?

You'll need a good old fashioned TV aerial. It might be cheaper for you to buy a freesat box instead and run an extra cable from your satellite dish to the new TV (a local installer can advise you as to cost but it will definitely be cheaper than putting up an aerial). Freesat is basically all the free channels from Sky but without a subscription. A box costs around £40, or about £130 if you want HD channels.

You need to buy an indoor digital tv aerial - they're about £30 or so and in most stores like Dixons, Currys, John Lewis etc.

    We've got something like this

It's got a booster on it as signal can sometimes be poor in our area. Dead easy to set up and we have a fabulous picture.

We've just got an indoor aerial with booster and it works fine. I don't think it's a special digital one though.

Thanks all - see I don't feel such an idiot now - I love this place.

I love the sound of an indoor aerial and thanks for the link

There's load of different types - some are just for analogue signals but if you've got a freeview built in TV I'm guessing it's a digital TV.

In which case get a digital tv aerial. Some of them even state they're suited for freeview and DAB radio - I know with our TV we've got loads of DAB radio stations included.

As I said, you may want to get one that includes an amplifier to boost the TV signal - we have thick walls so got an amplifier. If you don't include an amplifier the price is cheaper.

Your local Currys or Maplin should have all these types for you.
