Please slap me (unacceptable racial stereotype of Germans)

barongreenback, 11 June, 2008 at 20:47 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 24

I just cannot help sniggering when I hear Germans (or Austrians or Swiss Germans to be all inclusive) speaking English. It's the camp accent. I know I'm wrong and what's worse, I have German colleagues that I speak to regularly. How do I get out of this childish habit?

I have just corpsed at the Austrian guy who informed the BBC pundit that he 'will make party all night long, ja' ?

    I sympathise.

Would you believe my company's IT support is based in Germany?

Trying to explain access to server problems is hard enough remotely without me creasing up everytime the IT bloke opens his mouth.?

A Polish girl once told me there were 'no nice mans' in Belfast.

    I giggled.

Mr B has just said exactly the same thing. So if it's any consolation you're not alone in you unacceptable (though mainly correct) stereotype.

I always have a little inward snigger because the accent reminds me of Herr Lipp (League of Gentlemen fans will need no introduction).

    [slap] grow up.

I don't at all call Mr Layabout "hun" in reference to his German ancestry and take the piss horribly, oho no. There's nothing funny about German accents [falls about]

I know that it is both wrong and puerile to snigger when a German relative of mine refers to her father as 'Farty'. I can't help it.

But it's spelt Vati IIRC ?

As an 11yr old I found it [BB woman] hiwwwariuss [/BB woman] that German for Granddad was Grossvater. It was right when 'gross' was a very overused word.

I'm afraid I sniggered too - it sounded like the line that precedes 'and all their clothes fell off' in poor quality porn.

Our German textbook at school had an exercise which had the word "briefmark" (stamps) printed in handwriting, unfortunately with germanic style handwriting it looked like "briefw a n k" - it was the most thumbed page in the book by miles

Am I alone in thinking that a German accent is incredibly sexy on a man?

I even started studying German with a view to moving out there to do an MBA and finding myself a nice German man. Somewhere along the line I got together with my now H and decided to stay in the US instead. Not quite sure how that happened.

Mr Mal finds the Dutch accent hilarious. Any time he sees a Dutch footy player or manager speaking on TV, he ends up with his sides splitting.

    MrL does look terribly German!

Apparently I look German too.But I am not. I have been to Germany/German switzerland a few times though and people start conversations with me all the time. I just nod and laugh.Germans must be most friendly to other germans though <resists urge to make tasteless hitler joke>

You're not alone! I love to listen to people speaking German.

When I was doing A-level German (and was the only person in my year taking the class) our 'German' assistant was from Austria, 6' something or other and blond. I had a terrible time concentrating in class!

I'm off to Germany tomorrow so lots of comedy potential! Mind you my German is dire so I'm sure there will be sniggering from both sides.

yerp - but all the people from manchester are down at 5.45 so it doesnt count any more

the only german accent i come across regularly is our riding teacher - i choke back any laughter because she has a whip

i adore her though - and she completely belies any talk of lack of sense of humour
