Pleeeease help find me a dress!

InkedDoll, 4 June, 2014 at 10:19 Posted on Planning 0 24

So. For my wedding I am going for an early 60s vibe and I'd like to wear a typical 60s style shift dress. Here is a perfect example of the shape I'm looking for:

However, can I find the sort of thing I'm after? No, I cannot.

I want any shade of white, ivory, cream, nude, neutral or anything in that region. Any length up to about the knee, must have sleeves but anything between cap sleeves and elbow length. Must be available in a size 18 or maybe a 16 at a push (I am losing weight but definitely don't wanna buy a dress I need to 'diet into'!)

Things I don't want, which seem to be available in abundance: skater, bodycon or pencil style. I also can't order from Very or any of their associated catalogues as my past poor credit means they won't give me an account, even if I'm paying on the spot. I would happily consider ordering from the US, Canada or Aus (but not China!) and would also happily consider vintage. I have a fairly flexible budget.

Can anyone help?!

Speak to the amazing Tobi Hannah. She specialises in the 50s, 60s vibe.

Any of these any good? Sleeves can easily be shortened.

CC, that second one would be perfect if it wasn't for that silver bit at the bottom! I suspect if I had that removed altogether it'd be too short.

Bex, I have looked at Tobi Hannah but cos they are 'wedding' dresses they are all just too fancy for me.

But thankyou both, the search continues!

If your budget is flexible why not try a dress maker?

Some of those might work - thankyou! For some bizarre reason Monsoon is blocked here at work so I shall have a closer look at them at home this evening. In the meantime, any other suggestions gratefully received Smiley smile

Ta daaa! https://uk.monsoon.co.uk/view/product/uk_catalog/mon_1,mon_1.2/5532944610 Not so sure about the 60's shift style now I see it on the model but I thought it looked it on the hanger.

Try House of Mooshki - if they haven't got a dress in the style you want then Olivia their designer can sketch a bespoke design for you and then they'll make it. They're making my wedding dress and i cant recommend them highly enough

I'd also contact Melanie James Bridal Boutique in Chorlton, she makes bespoke wedding dresses and her prices reflect the amount of work that goes in to a dress so I imagine a simple shift dress wouldn't break the bank. See if it's something she'd be prepared to do, the woman is a genius and her work is stunning.

My friend owns a shop specialising in vintage/retro stock - http://www.queenofthreads.co.uk/ - if you let her know what sort of thing you are looking for, she might be able to help.

I'll be honest i stole these suggestions from a friend who was looking for 'a 60's inspired dress, size 18!' so it couldn't be a more perfect muse.

don't know if they'll be your taste chicken, but worth a try eh?

Thankyou all! A few more suggestions that are blocked at work (it's a completely unpredictable system), so I shall be having a good old look through at work this evening, Miss Winter, I have an account with Simply Be and hadn't even noticed that dress...weird Smiley smile

Their large is only apparently a 14, so too small. A shame though, some of those are very pretty Smiley sad

I think I'm gonna go to Monsoon and see if they have a couple of those celticcurl posted in stock. I can't believe I hadn't seen them before - the fact their site is blocked here had obviously just stopped me looking altogether! Makes no sense Smiley smile That one from Simply Be might also be a contender, but the fact it has an elasticated waist may be an issue - I'm quite tall and I find that they tend to sit too high on me and make me look pregnant. But I've pinned it! Thankyou all again for your ideas, it's been so helpful.

I have looked on Etsy and found quite a good contender, although I have concerns about the creasiness (not a word) of the organic cotton fabric she uses. But again, I've pinned it. Modcloth only seem to have skater/50s styles, many of which I love generally, but not what I'm looking for on this occasion. But at least i have a few in the running now Smiley smile

Not sure this will be right, as it's got black in it, but still quite pretty, anyway, I just stumbled across it.
