Plus size bridesmaids dresses... any advice?

Vanadesse, 1 June, 2014 at 18:58 Posted on Planning 0 9

Looking for somewhere, preferably a shop so that we can go in and see them first, that I can get plus size bridesmaids dresses. I need a size 18 and two size 24s. I do NOT want China dresses from eBay. I would rather buy in store but would consider online, just not anything overseas. Any suggestions?

I'm not entirely sure where to go, have you tried places like Evans?

I know that you can order larger sizes from M&S but don't know about if they have them just in the shop.

One of my BM's is a size 18 (measured to be a 26 for the dress though) and we got her dress as well as my size 12 sisters dress from my local bridal shop who stocks True Bride.

How about Monsoon? I know they go up to a 22, I've not seen size 24 in there, but the 22 dresses sometimes come up quite big depending on the type of dress so it might be worth looking in there.

M&S have a bridesmaid range. I got a size 22 dress from there and it fits me (I'm 22/24).

David's Bridal - online or there's a shop in Stratford London Westfield - they do bridesmaid dresses for loads of sizes.

    BHS?

Also general bridal shops that stock bridesmaid dresses sometimes do larger sizes.

    Hope that helps!

IMHO you need to be careful of relying on bridal shops for dresses for size 24 ladies. You definitely don't want any traditional satin shiny dresses going on.

I'd totally sit down with them and have a look at stuff online together over some wine. Give them a chance to say what they want, eg. floor length and/or bolero etc if they don't want short strapless numbers like the skinny minnies. Loads of shops like M&S and BHS will have dresses online in larger sizes. Plus, ask THEM. If you're not a size 24 yourself, you'll find that your bridesmaids know great places to look for dresses in their sizes as they have to do it all the time.

You could also try Simply Be, they go from a size 14 up to a size 30 or something I think.

Lady V go up to a size 30 in some of their designs, but you must take actual measurements and use the website's size guide for each dress rather than just going on their "usual" size.

It depends on what your budget is and what you had in mind. As suggested, most proper bridal shops have plus size bridesmaid dresses (phone beforehand to check) Dessy bridesmaid can be ordered in plus sizes but are on the more expensive side. Prices start at £150 for Dessy but this gives you comfort that the dresses will all be colour matched etc even if they are in different designs.

If you are looking for high street I agree that asking them what they want and if they have seen anything in their usual shops might give you a starting point. Do you have more info to give us or flashes of the style you have seen?
