Plus Size Photography? Never any examples :-(

Miss Belle, 3 August, 2013 at 22:27 Posted on Planning 0 19

Hi, any of you plus size ladies able to recommend a photographer or any photographers have any examples of wedding photos they have done of plus size brides?

I have seen lots of togs whose gallaries I love but I never see any examples of plus size brides. I've found some togs at wedding fayres that rather seem to loose enthusiasm sometimes when a plus size bride comes along which I find a little disconcerting because I wouldn't want a tog shooting my wedding wjen they don't feel enthusiastic..... I truely believe that taking flattering pictures of plus size ladies is a skill in its self! I have some lovely photos of me and equally some terrible ones! I really would like some lovely photos takes by someone with an understanding of how to flatter a plus size bride :-)

thank you for any help

Not sure where you are based although I have shot many brides of all sizes over the years. To me a bride is a bride. The happiness of the day is what is important to capture. You will find some plus sized brides on my webpages...

Oddly, there aren't that many people who I'd consider plus sized. Or at least I've shot with.

Sizes go all the way to 22 and beyond right? So does someone who is a size 14 consider themselves plus and everyone below them standard?

I know someone who models plus sized stuff on the TV and in catalogues and she's a size 12. My fiancee is a 12 and I consider her quite slender tbh. (I really don't know what the norm is...hopefully there isn't one).

You can try Here and Here for some larger frames but nobody I would consider a plus size.

There's also some inbetween sizes on my site. Being a guy I don't quite understand the plus size thing. I don't ask a ladies size either Smiley laugh

I have other galleries which aren't on my site too and these are acessible if you email me for their password.

I am disgusted that those photographers would act like that to be honest and you are right about taking flattering pictures of plus size ladies is a skill and not every photographer can pull it off, I am not sure what you mean by plus size so I can only point you to my site http://www.inframeweddings.co.uk there are over 10000 photos in so many galleries that I have lost count.

Aww thanks for your responses, I have also received a couple of PMs and some of you have been really lovely so thanks! By plus size I mean I am a size 20/22. Also, I am getting married in Surrey if that is any help! I have just got back from holiday but will sit down tomorrow and have a look through your websites and reply to the PMs as soon as I can. Thanks so much ?

In the mean time I’d still love to hear from any other togs or OMs who have any advice etc

Hi Miss B...you are certainly the "other" side of the Thames from me compared to Chris and Bruce (who are both excellent)...although I do occasionally venture down south.

You mentioned that many sites don't show plus sized brides.......we do respect our couples requests and often not always our choices not to show images, they lay with the client.

    BTW...welcome to the forum.....

My tog did a wedding earlier this year with a 'plus size bride' (I don't really like that term!), and she looked amazing.

He's ? Have you had that coffee yet?

Honestly, don't worry yourself my lovely. As you can see from the responses above there are some togs who will be worth your time and others, unfortunately like the ones you've already met, who wont.

Of course you'll want to see something that you can relate to when doing your research, you're only human and it's reassuring to know that someone knows what they're doing with brides (& grooms!) of all shapes and sizes.

If you can't find what you're looking for on the actual website but love someones work otherwise, don't hesitate to get in touch with them and ask. Most Togs will be happy to show you other work, provide links to galleries and so on.

? Thanks for the mention Bonnie!

Hi! I am a plus sized bride (got married last thursday) and I am a size 20/22. I never even thought about it on the day as my photographer (Tim Hensell in Derbyshire) made me feel so comfortable Smiley smile He had me balancing on ledges and all sorts! Here are a couple of pics he sent me straight out of the camera and I love them! Hope this helps Smiley smile

I have to say that both as a photographer and a woman, I neither like nor understand the distinction which is made between *bride and plus-size bride*.

A bride is a bride and every woman, regardless of clothes size, is very welcome in front of my camera. Yes, this is a bit of a soap-box subject for me...?

I have never photographed a woman of size 20/22, but this is simply because I have never been contacted by a bride who wears such clothes' sizes.

Shame on any photographer who discriminates! Though I do not know any such photographers myself, I am certain that your experience and impressions at wedding fairs are, sadly, accurate.

Do not be put off on your search. If any photographer is unprofessional enough to turn you down because of your body shape, why would you want that person photographing your wedding anyway?

Good luck on your search and I am certain you will make the right choice!

My friend is 'plus size' (as am I for that matter) and her photographer did not bring his special fat lens or anything! Surely the first role of a wedding photographer is to take flattering pictures of the bride and make her look good - regardless of size? I can't imagine any photographer being less than entusiastic because of the dress size of the bride he is shooting? Ignoring the bad experiences you've had (this can happen with any supplier) and find a photographer who's style you love, they will replicate this on your day, regardless. Don't think you should be limiting yourself to only those who've specifically shot plus size brides in the past.

When looking at my photographer's work this never crossed my mind!

I concur with this although should add that we rarely hear mention of plus sized grooms!!! They do exist too.?

Indeed, I once photographed a couple who were both 30st.

    I sec

Well said Andrea. I too have a very large soapbox about this subject, being both a size 20/22 and having a boutique that specialises in wedding gowns for the 16+ bride. My most fabulous bride to date has been a size 36 and although I say it myself, she looked pretty amazing. Even more important though she FELT pretty amazing and confidence and happiness radiated from her on her wedding day.

I think ladies above a certain size label (hate the term plus sized, I would never called a size 8 a minus size) have had their confidence knocked in so many ways that they perceive themselves less of a woman than their peers who are a "normal" size. I battle with this everyday both professionally and personally and last year I attended the National Wedding Show as the only plus sized specialist. I ranted and raved about not being able to have a dress on the catwalk as I was told "they don't do that" but guess what...... this year they are! She will only be a 16-18 but its a start.

With the help of professionals such as yourself and the other TOG suppliers hopefully we can change this poor body image thing. I am shortly having a boudoir shot done (and yes I may even go naked) to prove to women you can be fully figured and fabulous and I shall hopefully have a canvas in the shop.

In the meantime I saw this on a website from an American curvy bridal supplier the other day and it sums things up nicely.
