Poll - Cathedral length veils...

Saracroft251, 12 August, 2009 at 19:28 Posted on Planning 0 24

Is it "wrong" to wear a veil to a civil ceremony ( my mother says so....)

I am having a civil ceremony in a lovely old hotel, very vintage and chic blah blah etc anyways I had kinda pinned my hopes on wearing a veil, in fact a full length (126 inch) one....... nice and classic to go with our venue ...............................but now my mum has really put me off - are people going to think I am odd for having a veil at the civil ceremony?

Please can you reply to the thread and put a) Veil is Wrong or b) Veil is Right

Thanks

SC

I'm having a civil ceremony in a hotel and this hadn't even occured to me. I'm wearing a veil and my MoH wore one when she got married (also civil). I say B. x

    B - right

If thats what you want wear it - your dress isn't big so it won't look too much imho. I was really worried about 'overdoing' it for our civil service and only had a shorter veil - but tbh thats because that one went with my dress.

I don't think that the length makes a difference tbh (in the sense that it would be 'wrong' to wear a cathedral length, but fingertip one would be okay?!)

    Another vote for B here.

I've been to 4 civil ceremonies and 3 of the brides wore veils. Didn't look out of place in the slightest. If you want one my dear, you should have one!

Oh, and I love cathedral length veils. I still have pangs that I should have had one.

B! I am going for floor length trailing on the floor! And getting married in a barn. My aunt was saying she didn't wear a veil as already had a baby etc and didn't feel it was right (they are originally meant to symbolise chastity I think). But balls to that!

    Go for what you want.

I think B. I'm going to wear a medium length one to our civil ceremony. I associate veils with brides, rather than churches. I wasn't planning to wear one, but it just looked appropriate with the dress.

I say do what you want. I didn't want a floor length veil so hard to say whether I would have worn one to my civil ceremony but I did have a finger length veil and didn't once consider not wearing it. I LOVED it! My veil and my tiara were my most favourite purchases!

    I vote for the veil,

    A) I love cathedral length veils and support all who want to wear them

    B) Ceramony is a ceramony where ever it is so i think the formality of veil is just right be it church or civil.

    C) If you love it go for it, I say no regretts plus you can take it out post ceramony and bingo two looks for one day and chaper than 2 dresses.

I'm having a an elbow length veil (got the call to say that it has arrived in the shop), IMO I think it would be a bit much to wear the veil over your face in a civil ceremony but it's fine as an accessory.

I agree with everyone who say 'wear what you want'. I am having a civil ceremony and I will definately wearing a veil. I haven't picked it yet but the one I tried on with my dress was full length to the floor and everyone said that I should pick that one. I remember saying that I thought it was a bit too much for a civil ceremony but everyone soon helped me change my mind. x

I'm with everybody else - I vote B and say its your wedding and you can do exactly what you want. I think veils are more about the overall look than to do with the location of your wedding.

I'm having a waist length veil for my civil wedding in a Hotel and I'll be honest, I hadn't even though about that being wrong!!

    You go girl!!!!!

I say b, my dress has a cathedral train, so I have not gone for a cathedral veil.

Also I am borrowing my friends veil which is proberly a finger tip one I think but not sure. She wore it for her civil ceromany and i will be wearing it for mine. But not over my face, its not that kind of veil

I say wear one! im having a civil ceremony outside hopefully and am having a veil elbow length. when trying on the different wedding dresses i loved putting the veils and tiaras on!!?

it was the main thing that we were all looking at, until i tried on the dress! dont think i could personally carry off a cathedral veil as im quite short and my dress has quite a train on it, (plus im going through a clumsy phase at the mo and would prob end up treading on it or triping up over it some how!)but i think they look lovely!!

    I vote B!

I don't see any reason why you can't wear a veil for a civil ceremony. We're having a civil and although I've decided not to have a veil this is purely because I didn't think any I tried on suited me or my dress and I guess I'd always had a vision of me wearing a sparkly headband instead! If you want one go for it.

    B. defo. Sod tradition.

The only think I would say is my mate had a proper long cathedral veil and she was terrified to move her head during the whole ceremony and photos so it looked a bit like she had a stiff neck or something! Its so noticable in her video it really spoiled things. She wouldn't even turn her head to look at her groom properly during the ceremony, just shuffed her whole body round.

I think the weight surprised her as it was decorated quite heavily with crystals and maybe wasn't fixed as well as it should have been in her hair but it did make her look very odd! So make sure you hairdresser puts it on super super well so you're not scared of it falling off and have a good trial run around the hairdresses to make sure!!
