Poooo - speshul baby present help pls

Flump, 10 June, 2009 at 21:09 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 31

So I was going to get my niece a silver bracelet and charm from Dower & Hall for her first birthday / naming day. But one of my sister's friends has just texted me saying she's bought one already, so I need to think of another bright idea now. I like the idea of something silvery, or something I can add too over the years. Any suggestions please? Nothing religious as she's not being christened, just a naming day.

Thank yoooooo [sulk]

How roode of them. a charm bracelet sounds lovely, I would have loved for ours to have those. I can't think of anything particularly you could add to over the years I must admit, unless it's a collection of things (I had Beatrix Potter wade figures when I was young that my great aunt used to add to every birthday) but could you get her a locket? that would be v special.

Beswick dear! ? They were soooo cool. I could see if there is a lovely range of china wotsits I could buy her, your collection was fab. Even though Karen Cooper broke Benjamin Bunny's ears or whatever it was ?

Locket good idea too, will have a peruse. What kind of shops good for that do you think? Not Harriet Samuel obv. Hummmmmmmmm.....

    Bah, what a PITA.

Mum bought each bratfink a gorgeous napkin ring with their names engraved on (although that may be a not so subtle hint to use napkins more often...). Not really something you could add to though, what about old (as in not 2009 edited to remove the good bits) books like the Enid Blyton stuff, I would have been over the moon if someone had done something like that for the girls (not so I could re read them all, ooooh no ?).

Not something you can add to as such although it could be...one coin per year etc.

A colleague of mine recently got married and her father presented her with a five pound coin he had bought the year she was born. She carried it with her as her something 'old' (she's only 24 or so so not old old as such but I thought it was a lovely idea).

Classic Children's Books are always a great choice, imo. We got the complete Winnie-the-Pooh (classic edition); The Wind in the Willows (beautiful hardback....walker classic I think) and Aesop's Fables for one of the boy's Christenings. Over the years we've also collected the works of Roald Dahl, Brothers Grimm, Dr Seuss, Roald Dahl and various Fairy Tale compendiums (some of which have survived since my childhood)

    Nice editions here: https://www.lovereading4kids.co.uk/genre/cla/classics

This is a good compilation, but doesn't look as nice: https://www.thebookpeople.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10001_10051_166017_100_500020__category_

These are lovely: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Beatrix-Potter-Complete-Tales-Original/dp/072325804X/ref=pd_sim_b_60 or https://www.amazon.co.uk/Thomas-Tank-Engine-Complete-Collection/dp/1405216905/ref=pd_sim_b_3 or https://www.amazon.co.uk/Winnie-Pooh-Complete-Collection-Stories/dp/0416199615/ref=pd_sim_b_1

These are a little old-fashioned but remain some of my favourites:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Shirley-Hughes-Collection/dp/0370326822/ref=pd_sim_b_5

Or you could make up your own collection of books either for the baby/toddler years : The Gruffalo, We're Going On a Bear Hunt, Each, Peach, Pear, Plum, The Tiger Who Came to Tea etc; or for when she's slightly older - perhaps some of your favourite childhood stories - Anne of Green Gables, Faraway Tree, Black Beauty, The Secret Garden, etc

A lovely Children's Encyclopedia or Atlas?

I think O'll leave it there....my Amazon Basket is already overflowing and I wasn't even looking for anything!

Well if she's getting jewellery then she's going to need somewhere to keep it so I think a lovely jewellery box would fit the bill, a musical one. MissSun, at just 3, absolutely adores her jewellery box and loves to see the ballerina and rummage inside, she also went to another little girls party on saturday who had a music box and they were fighting over it.

You can always buy a little bit of jewellery to go in each each year.

Wow that's a fab list of links, thanks Macca! Old Enid Blytons a good call, although have you seen the price of some of them now? I was in Pedlars in London recently, and one of the Famous Five books in hardback was £80! My sister and I still have quite a few of our old ones, maybe we should find out if we're sitting on a goldmine ? Coins - ooh I got given some of those sets when I was small, although I always wanted to break them open and spend them ? No idea where they are now!

Ooh I like the idea of a jewellery box, thanks Sunset. Will see if I can find a pretty one somewhere. Any shops you could recommend? John Lewis maybe?

We bought one as a christening gift and it went down a treat

Something different and definitely a keeper, though not sure how you would add to it !

We bought nephew no1 the Mr Men collection for his first birthday among things he could actually play with.

I'm trying to think of christening type presents...

Silver cutlery set (not just random cutlery obviously - i've seen some cute ones in the past)
    Locket (already been said)
    A bracelet that is engraved?
    Something with her birthstone in?

    I know, I know - not really helping! ?

My sister and I were given a peter rabbit china plate, bowl, egg cup and mug as christening presents and we absolutely adored them, actually I think we drove my mum a bit bonkers as they had to be produced every meal time, but it was a lovely thougtful and useful present.

I like beatrix potter, but prefer the moomins so if I was going to do that for someone's kid I'd get a moomin set!

The book people do the complete mr men set for a very reasonable price if you want to go down the book route:

Casting set is cool, although I do find that one a bit freaky for some reason! Maybe I could find one that makes an imprint rather than a cast!

? Spot. Silver cutlery nice idea actually, I have bought a friend's baby a Robert Welch set in the past, and it was fab. Will see what I can find. I might still buy the bracelet I had in mind but not make it a charm thing, as my sister and I both have the same bracelet with one charm, and it would be nice for her to have one too.

Peter Rabbit / Beatrix Pottery crockery set is a fab idea too, but I've been buying her bits of that already from boot sales - I'm so classy ?

I second the musical/jewellary box. I got my friends bubba a really beautiful snow globe from JL which is really pretty. OK, she can't play with it, but I'd like to think it's something she can keep forever xx

I really like the jewellery box idea, I think it would be lovely (says me who has struggled to find a nice one for myself as an adult)

Btw Sparkley I think I've added you on FB just in case you're wondering who it was... if not I've added a complete random with a similar name

Yes I like the jewellery box idea as well - I always wanted a ballerina one when I was little! ? I've had a quick Google but they all look horrific and cheap. Boo hoo. If anyone sees a nice one anywhere, please let me know!

Snow globe would be a fantastic idea, but another friend has apparently got her one. Gah! [stampy foot tantrum]

Coming a bit out of left wing here, but what about a little rocking horse? I got this one for my daughter's 1st birthday and it is lovely. Something she can keep as well, she'll use it for at least 3 years (my 4 year old nephew loved it last weekend!) and she can pass it on to her child as and when.

You could get her a pair of bookends, and then give her a book each year.

Not quite a jewellery box, but I've bought these before and they're rather lovely:

This is a smaller present, but an idea I stole from Hitched and have used lots as both mums and babies seem to love them - maybe to go with some books?:

Coming to this a bit late, and I don't normally post on OT so HI!

One of my friends bought my daughter a precious stone (her birth stone in fact) and has promised when she reaches 18 she will pay to have it made in to a piece of jewelery of my daughter's choice/design. I thought this was such a lovely idea as she has part of the gift now but will actually get something that suits her taste/style when she is older.

Obviously you could buy extra precious stones over the years if you wanted (my daughter is just getting the one for hers) but you may not want to add to it every year or the piece of jewelery could end up being very 'blingy'!

Links of London do a lovely wooden ark and you can add silver animals over the years. It's very expensive though (£500 for the ark alone!) but maybe there's somewhere that does something similar at a more reasonable price.

I could almost build an ark for that 😄 It sounds fab though. On a similar vein, I was looking at the Tales of the Earth set of silver animals that they do. Or this is lovely too, but is it a bit overpriced / not 'substantial' enough?

Thanks for more links, all. Still hunting for the ultimate musical jewellery box though, they're all a bit too pink so far!

    http://www.magicalmusicboxes.com/girlsmusicaljewelleryboxes_bal5003.htm this one's not pink

MissSun has the cheapy £11 swan lake navy blue one that's on a lot of the sites, she adores it, it was mine when I was small.

I saw a lovely wooden one yesterday and you could choose the tune it played and have an engraving inside but I can't find it now.

I love the Enid Blyton and stones ideas.

My nephew was given a box of red and white wine by his godparents. That will be mature when he is 18.

A leather photo album. Then on each birthday until she is 18 you can give her a dozen or so photos that represent her year. First day at school etc, so she will have one special concise compedium.

    /albums-and-books/leather-photo-albums

Or an engraved cake knife as she's bound to love cake one day and she can use it forever. (Bit weddinging though)

I'm probably too late to this, but thought I'd share what one of my friends received, although he is a bloke...

His godfather bought a silver cutlery set - not a child's one - a real one. Every year on birthdays and Christmas my friend received another piece to his set and it grew into a fantastic set over the years. He is now 34 and I think the set is complete and he loves it - it's really special to him.

However, you would need to be careful that you would be able to still buy the cutlery over the years

My H has bought his godson a case of fantastic wine that is sitting in a cave in France somewhere, getting better and better each year. When his godson is 21 (he lives in America) he will arrange to ship the wine over there. That's a long way off - godson is only 3, however, his parents were really pleased, and I'm sure when he is old enough, he will appreciate a really good bottle of wine ?
