Possible Benefit Fraud Question

gem1978, 9 December, 2009 at 08:21 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 3

Hi all, not been on here for a very long time....but I cannot find the answer to this through Google so wondered if you knowledgable people on hitched might be able to help. My beloved Grandma passed away last week and between then and now there has been some very suspicious and disturbing details regarding her will which have surfaced. Basically it looks as though other family members have persuaded her to change her will recently to massively benefit them.

We have also discovered that a family member had applied for Attendance Allowance for Gran at the higher rate - Gran does not fit the profile of this and looks like they excaggerated (sp) her problems to get her more money. She did not need more money, had fab pension and would never have willingly gone along with defrauding anyone for her gain. As far as I can tell this has been done to get more money in 'the pot' it seems.

This point aside, my real question is can I find out somehow if this same family member has been claiming for Carer's Allowance for looking after my Gran (which she didnt do)? This is just a suspision at this stage but evidence has shown that this person seems to be capable of all sorts in order to get herself more money. I am desperate to know what lengths she has gone to in order to do this.

Any help / advice would be greatly appreciated. I am nervous to do anything about inflated Attendance Allowance as this is obviously in gran's name....

The sad thing is that my head is racing with all of this rubbish when I should be mourning my Gran. Just hate the thought of someone having taken advantage of her.

Thanks in advance for any help xx

You can't actually find out if they have received it (and its incredibly difficult to qualify for) but you can contact your local benefits office and give them all the details of this person, why you think they have defrauded the system and they will look into your claim,

    sorry about your grandma x

Thank you. I thought that might be the case....I think I will wait and see what we can decipher from looking at my Gran's accounts and go from there. It's so hard to know what to do for the best to try and do the right thing by my Grandma. Thanks again x

    I know what you mean.

Of course if she was fraudulently claiming it would be difficult to prove that she wasn't caring for your grandma in retrospect.

Its entirely in your hands, but you maybe need a little while to get things straight in your head

Very true, emotions are running very high at the moment and will be good to let things calm down a little before deciding whether to go any further with this, and a number of other issues that have arisen. Not a nice situation to be in at the moment. Thanks for advice x
