Possibly sens question re: late father and marriage certificate

Melancholie, 21 December, 2014 at 21:20 Posted on Planning 0 9

My father died in 2008 and it's just occurred to me that they may mark him as deceased on the marriage certificate tomorrow.

Does anyone know if this is automatically on the certificate if either the bride's or groom's father has passed away?

Yes they do I am afraid. It's on my wedding certificate. (Both my husband's and my father :-( )

As soon as it occurred to me earlier I thought that would probably be the case but Google just brought up a load of genealogy sites with information about certificates from the 1800s.

Thanks urbanbridesmaid. I can mentally prepare myself for that now.

Yes, sadly this means my OH will have both his parents as deceased on the certificate

same here, would have been a shock otherwise. Silly really why they do this.

Both our dads are deceased but we are really pleased to have them on the marriage certificate as it is another way of including them in our day.

Our registrar did tell us they would be included when we gave notice but even if it was not mentioned, we would have expected to see their names.

I will cry anyway, whether at that or my bouquet memory charms or the mention of them in the speeches...or...or....! it is all part of the day!

I think you've misunderstood me, kimiu. I meant would it automatically say "(deceased)", not would he be on there at all or not.

I've done a lot of family history research and it really helps with narrowing down dates if you know a father has died before his child gets married, but even though I've seen it written on many certificates I've got, I hadn't really thought about it on my own until now.

Both me and the OH have lost our dad's, so it's going to look a little odd and will have to get used to seeing it on there compared to our first marriages ☹️

I just had a look at mine and had not really appreciated it before. I think I would view it as a comfort that their name is on there.
