Posting political views on FB

Holey, 5 May, 2015 at 13:29 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 38

What are your thoughts on this?

A lad I work with has been posting Conservative party updates and encouraging others to vote for them.

I really don't agree with this and think your vote is personal to you and shouldn't make any difference to anyone else*

*unless you're voting for UKIP in which case you should share your views so others can actively discourage you.

I'll add that if anyone asked me who I was voting for I wouldn't tell them.

I think informed debate is healthy. Some of OH's friends post 'britain first' stuff. If it was my fb page I would put them straight but OH is more laid back so just ignores and doesn't read.

I think people post all sorts of stuff on fb that people receiving it don't agree with but you can ignore, engage in debate or block.

Your 'unless voting for UKIP' makes the point, it's something you feel strongly about and so it is acceptable but why should it be any different?

Just to be clear the UKIP comment was meant light heartedly.

I see your point about it sparking debate etc but I don't think you need to say 'I am voting conservative' in order to do this.

I've never understood why some people have this big secret around who they are voting for. It's not something to be embarrassed by so why hide it. (Unless you are just trying to avoid getting into a debate with people which is fair enough).

You made me chuckle with the UKIP comment.

I suppose it depend s on the individual. It personally wouldn't bother me sharing who'd I'd voted for but what would get my goat is if by sharing i was challenged & expected to justify why.

Political posts do annoy me though.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there.

I was also brought up to believe it's no-one's business but my own Holey. I was also brought up to believe that polite conversation does not include such subjects as politics and religion ?

However, I think times have moved on and these days we discuss far more than we ever used to. In general, I think we are so much more open about many aspects of our lives, our beliefs and our ethical standpoints that it's more acceptable to put political updates on FB.

I also think that is one of the good points of social media - the way we can have open discussions and debates around politics, especially at election times. I know so many people who say they don't know who to vote for, but have been interested enough to read the views on FB which often link to polls or quizzes that help with the decision - that's a definite plus in my book ?

I know lots of people who do it, mainly by sharing articles and memes from third party pages or sources. If i think they look interesting I'll read and maybe engage in a bit of conversation in the comments, if not I just skim on by. Doesn't bother me either way really, unless they were posting so much stuff that it was clogging my feed, and that would apply to posts on any topic.

Have too say it doesn't bother me unless it's racist/homophobic/sexist then I usually say I don't want to see it on my feed. BUT on the other hand I don't necessarily tell people who I vote for,I live with my fil and recently told him who I was voting for, had a huge row about it *seriously women didn't go to all this trouble to get the vote for a man to tell them how to do it!* so from now on I won't tell anyone as I don't want to have too defend myself for no reason (if that makes sense)

When it comes to opinions I think everyone is entitled too one and just cause it's not what I think does not (always) make it wrong so I don't tend too get annoyed or question why people don't vote how I do.

It only bothers me in as much as I'm bored / apathetic of the whole thing anyway, so seeing more and more posts about it just irritate me. It doesn't matter which party. I've already decided who I'm going to vote for. I work in local government so we've been bombarded with all kinds of election information for several months, not just the national campaigns. I understand why they campaign, but I'm afraid from a personal perspective it bores me.

So yes I get annoyed by all the political statements that appear in my FB feed - but not because they're political but because I'm a miserable grump that wants it all to just stop now... Smiley winking

    ?

It is starting to bug me. I've discovered that I have different views to one of my closest friends and her posts are starting to grate. Debate is fine, but pushing it onto people not so much. Like Jehovahs witnesses

I don't mind a debate about politics on forums or Facebook groups but find it annoying on main Facebook feeds particularly as most of it is so far removed from fact.

I also find it funny when people make sweeping statements or insinuate voters of a particular party are all the same e.g

"everyone who supports UKIP are racist bigots" (I particularly love the irony of that one)

"everyone who supports labour are just scummy benefit scroungers"

"everyone who supports Tories are rich toffs"

"everyone who supports the greens are hippy, vegetarian, tree huggers"

    Clearly very informed statements hehe

I think it's annoying. I don't have a problem with someone saying 'i'm going to be voting X', but I do get annoyed when someone keeps posting things about what I should be voting and why.

I didn't ask for their opinion and find it a bit arrogant that they think their friends would just follow their lead.

For me, it's up there with duck face selfies and cryptic statuses.

I'm not knowledgable enough on politics to get into debates, so I tend to just ignore or hide the posts, but it does bother me that every other post at the moment is something to do with Tory bashing/Labour bashing/Farage bashing.

Does anyone bash the Lib Dems?

I find it bizarre that anyone would have an issue with it.

I've shared lots of articles about everything and as we draw ever close to tomorrow then they are more articles about politics so I am sharing more posts about it! I find it amazingly furstrating that some people aren't going to vote (15.9 million people that could vote, didn't vote last time. The conservatives only got about 11 million votes) and want to try and encourage everyone to vote so share lots of political articles at the moment.

It's on their wall, so it's like complaining that you have viewed someone elses house and there are lots of magazines in their house on politics.

My facebook feed is full of pro-SNP status' and anti other parties.

It doesn't bother me, but it would if I wasn't of the same political opinion. Even then, I'd probably just set to hide said posts.

I'm looking forward to not coming home to piles of leaflets through my door every day!

I would much prefer people talked about politics on Facebook than their dinner/the weather/the fact they're in Tesco/the fact that their baby has just done a poo.

Must admit am getting slightly wound up by the amount of Facebook statuses this morning saying "I didn't vote Tory and none of my friends did so how did they get in? I'm off to Australia".

Firstly, I don't necessarily think your handful of friends is representative of the UK (please note - I didn't vote Tory either but that's beside the point). Secondly, about 20 people have already made the same post on my Facebook feed and it is now boring. Thirdly, from what I understand of Australia's politics, it is more right wing over there so you'll get on well there, no doubt.

Sorry irrational rant! For some reason really winding me up this morning.

A friend of mine did post that he's had a couple of dates with a girl who was planning to vote Tory and he wasn't sure whether to let it go or stop seeing her. It raised some interesting questions about politics in relationships. I think my H is mildly miffed that I'm more apathetic than he is, but that's as far as it goes.

Calalella, I actually grew up in the Highlands (left when I was 15). I was bullied horrifically as a child for being a nerd whose dad was English and mum American, but I do get the impression that it's better these days...

Yeah the Highlands can be a little tricky. I've spent time on the Isle of Lewis and I got shunned for being a "mainlander"

But generally we're a very accepting bunch!

My Facebook has basically turned in to PoliticsBook this morning with mainly SNP support and concern over what's going to come from the Tories.

I voted tory, but know a lady who is labour supporter through and through. We have differing views and she is very vocal about hers (which is fine) and being non-confrontational I don't publicise my views on certain topics (eg country sports) as I really can't be bothered to argue about them with people who don't have a clue what they're talking about (I'd like to clarify: not everyone with differing views doesn't know what they're talking about, but the majority on my news feed don't!!)

I've had months of tory-bashing pictures and articles on my news feed for months, and was actually quite glad that it would now stop. Except she's just shared 'these are all the bad things that will happen now they have power'. ?

While I don't necessarily agree with all of the Tory plans, under a Labour government it is likely OH would have lost his job (and our house which comes with it), so it was a bit of a no brainer on our part!

Grrr I don't know enough about this to have a concrete view however Facebook is full of people Ranting on about it today and putting graphics up one had said nightmare On downing Street has just began. Well it's to me it's a load of uneducated in respect of politics (including myself in that category) just copying other people because it's seemingly the trend today. Had Mr Milliband won they would be rather similar comments being made I'm sure same with Mr clegg. Also they can't be bad Mr Cameron is in front of the Queen forming parliament at the moment so enough people must like him!!
