Postman - complaint worthy or just helpful?

I love shoes, 19 May, 2009 at 21:29 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 10

Weve been at this address now for a month and we have had numerous parcels delivered by the postman which he has just thrown over the back gate whilst we have been out at work..

Luckily none of them were breakable but its just a matter of time

And today we had a recorded delivery item which the postman signed for and wrote on the envelope - "I signed for this for you. The postman"

I appreciate that it saves us having to go to the sorting office to pick it up but it doesnt help us if something goes missing as we wont have signed for it

Is this worthy of a complaint to royal mail or should we just be grateful for his helpfulness?

If you are able to catch him, maybe on a Saturday morning I would probably have a word. However, if you aren't able to speak to him direct I would make a complaint. It rather defeats the object of recorded delivery, if he is going to sign for it.

I wouldn't want to get him in trouble as he probably thinks he's doing you a favour. If you'd rather him stop then ask him.

We've had the same postman for a couple of years and he often signs for our packages. He did ask us first and we were pleased to have him do it as have never had a package go "missing" that he signed for and saved us the hassle of going to sorting office. In your situation I'd only complain if a signed for package went missing or if he chucked something marked 'fragile' over the gate.

I'd complain about something if you're really bothered about it. Are things likely to break if they are put over the back gate? Would you rather go and collect?

Is he signing in your name? If so I would definitely complain about that. If he's signing in his name then I assume that if something goes missing, the responsibility would lie with him, not you so I'd be considerably less bothered.

Thanks all for your opinions, we werent sure what to do about it...

The gate is 6ft high so it is quite a drop the other side so it wouldnt have to be too fragile to break from that height (he threw my fit bug over the other day - luckily it was well wrapped up)

Were not sure whose name he is signing it in, will wait a few days and check on the tracker system on the website

Will leave it a bit longer and see what else happens and then rethink the situation..

As someone said - think it was Chook, we dont want to get him into trouble as it is handy not having to go to the sorting office but on the other hand if something breaks or goes missing because of him - he shouldnt be doing it

Our postie checked with me first before signing for anything and she only does it when it can fit through the letterbox. If its too big, she'll take it away and leave a note, although if its parcels its sometimes a different postie in a van.

I suspect they're trying to be helpful and also helping themselves so they don't have to lug the package back to the sorting office after their shift, so I'd try and catch them and have a chat just to clarify what's acceptable and what's not. Most posties probably wouldn't throw a fragile packet over the fence but that's just my experience.

I would have a word with him as well. Our postmen either open my front door and put my parcel just inside, stick it in full view (which thankfully never happens often as I'm usually here) or hide it in the shrubs!

So it's nice he's trying to be helpful but not when something may break!

Could you try and have a word? Or write a note and pin it to your door?

Failing that, go and speak to your local Post Depo.

When I was on exam study leave, we had a postman who used to check if our front door was open and would leave it just inside the door! I'd be upstairs (usually showering) at the time he would knock, so I wouldn't hear him. For Pete's sake, we had a log basket outside the front door, that he could have left it in!

He was a complete loon, but Mum sorted him out!

I'd be livid, to be honest. If something is signed for it's usually because I've ordered it and I want to be able to sign for it so I have proof that I have or haven't reveived it. I think the postie is well out of order. Helping you? Nah - saving himself another trip, and breaking the rules to boot.

He's probably trying to be helpful (saving both you and him time) but it's completely unacceptable to throw parcels over a 6ft high fence and he shouldn't be signing off on recorded deliveries - defininitely not without your agreement.

If you won't see him to have a quick word, then I'd leave a note. If he continues doing it, complain to the depot. They'll take the complaint seriously .

WLGS. I'd complain - you wouldn't have much of a leg to stand on if anything wet missing or was broken. As far as RM would be concerned, you've signed for it.
