postpals

Ddpunk just mentioned this on another thread but I didn't want to hijack that thread talking about it ...

I'd never heard of it before - to steal their own intro "Welcome to Post Pals, the charity helping you to ‘Post a Smile on a Sick Child’s Face’ by the sending of cards, letters, emails and little gifts to seriously ill children and their siblings. It couldn’t be easier for anyone of any age to get involved, requires no commitment and costs only a stamp and 5 minutes of your time.." what a beautiful idea - I'm totally going to get on to doing this.

But then .... how do you pick who to write to? I clicked on the 'Find Pals' bit and was a bit overwhelmed - how do you choose?

I might set myself a little challenge, once a month, to pick at complete random and think up something lovely to send. What a lovely way to spend a couple of hours. Sniff.

I really like this..I've just had a brief look and not sure how you're supposed to pick either, there are sadly, so many children to chose from!

That's such a lovely idea. I'm going to have to get into this myself.

Ah nice one SW! It really is a lovely charity. The thank you letters have me in tears every time.

I was told that boys get less post than the girls when i first got involved but that might have evened out now. It's so, so difficult to choose, especially when there are sibling groups. I try to make sure i send something for each of them if i know there are siblings.

Doesn't have to be huge. Lots of the kids have loved receiving postcards from my holidays! Cheap as chips!

What a great idea! I am going to definitely do this. A friend of a friend organised hundreds of shoe boxes to send out at Christmas which I thought was brilliant. Everyone loves getting post - no matter how small.

    I love this!

Going to write to one of the kids tomorrow as I have a bit of spare time to go and buy a nice card etc.

you know I automatically was clicking on girls because I feel like I know how to write to girls (I love a bit of pink sparkle and X Factor chat!) ... I suppose that's what most do. OK, I shall push my creative boundaries! Ha ha!

I also feel like I have no idea how to talk to children. I never spend time around any so I have difficulty with pitching to their level, if you see what I mean. I'm still gonna give it a go though!

I'm finding it hard too - there's a page on there about what to (or not to) write. I think the point is more that they are receiving post, so even if it's a cool card with a quick note in it? I was thinking about maybe, for the younger ones, to write it from my dogs, with pics and stuff. Or is that a bit patronising?

No, I thought the same, but from my cats! I'm going to ASDA tonight so thought about picking up some top trumps/colouring books/etc and just sending with a card...

I've just started drafting a letter from Polly. It's so much fun! Elsie would never write to a kid, she's far too serious for all that.

Haha! Fab SW. Poppy writes letters, sends texts and even the occasional video message! I'll have a look at this too. Is it world-wide of just UK? I send heapos of mail back to the UK anyway so it's not a problem, just can get quite expensive if sending gifts.

Ladies you are all amazing!! I had never heard of this so I've told my friend about it and her little girl has already signed up - she can't wait to get loads of post pouring through her door!!

In the meantime, I've written to a little boy and I hope he enjoys my letter. I told him all about my children and what they were/are like at his age and included a little note from my young man too.

But you lot have honestly brought me to tears - you are fab xxx

Just wondering if there is a way of finding out whether our letters and gifts were received okay?

Probably not, unless sent recorded or tracked delivery?

The post is sent via a contact person rather than directly to the young persons home so I guess it may take a little longer to reach them.
