Power Walking - does it do any good

Roobarb, 14 June, 2009 at 13:43 Posted on Beauty & Wellbeing 0 4

Well after getting 3 weeks of the way through the BUPA 5k running plan I've had to give up. I fell into a small hole and hurt my foot, and then when that was better I got stinging pains in knees, and then my foot was agony again (although much better now)

I don't know if it's the strain on my joints or whatever with me being so big but with a heavy heart I've had to accept it's no use if I hurt myself every time I go and have to wait at least a week. And anyway now I don't have enough time to train for the 10k I'd wanted to do anyway.

But I did enjoy it and esp as I've now got all the essential kit (ie Nike+ for my iPod!) I wondered whether power walking might be better.

Anyone any experience of using this as their "main" form of exercise and do you find it any good? Do BUPA have any programmes similar to the running ones? I tried to look but their website appears to be down.

?

Shame about your injury - I was doing the BUPA 5K programme and did my knee in and had to have physio ... just had the ok to start again so planning on running again 'soon'!

The power walking has to be better than nothing in my opinion so Go For It I say! Perhaps after PW for a while your muscles will be strong enough for you to try running again?

Joanna Hall ( once a bit of a fitness hero of mine) is very much into walking as an easy doable way to fitness.

Google her, I'm sure she had some walking plans on her website or I'm sure, at the very least, she'd have some tips.

Personally I think a decent paced walk is a fab way to build fitness into your everyday schedule and I know when I was very fit a lot of it was assisted by the fact that I was a beat officer and walking every day at work.

    Good luck.

Hi Roobarb - sorry to hear about your injuries Smiley sad

A similar thing happened to me when I started running last year and after a few months had to give up with knee and back problems. Went to the physio and they told me that my core was rubbishly weak after having kids and gave me loads of exercises designed to strengthen that - back, buttocks, stomach. This, combined with being overweight was leading to injury..

Physio recommended power walking as the alternative along with the strength exercises and at the beginning of the year I started again and it's so much easier this time round (sadly I'm now waiting for an arthroscopy as it turns out I have damaged cartilege from a skiing accident years ago but this is a different knee to last year!)

So, blah blah blah, I do go on don't I? sorry! Definitely power walking would be a good idea but maybe look into core stuff aswell?

    Good luck

    Forgot I posted this!

? for replies, sadly my foot is still quite sore so am just going to get my bike out and go swimming and stuff instead and hopefully get some exercise in that way that will be less impact on my old fat body.
