Present for someone going round the world?

Croyde, 25 August, 2009 at 09:54 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 14

Hi all,

My assistant is off round the world for 18 months next month and as normal there will be a leaving card and collection, but I am stumpted at what to get her as a present. The fund will be anywhere from £50 - £100 and I just wondered if any of you have ever been travelling or bought a present for someone that is going and could give me so ideas? She is traveling with her BF and I dont think that it matters if its 1 more expensive thing or a few smaller items ...any ideas would be really really helpful!

Thanks

Can you find out from BF what they already have - I'd imagine they'll be travelling fairly light so won't want piles of gifts.

Those microfibre travel towels are useful and very lightweight.

Extra memory cards for her camera are always good - I imagine they'll get through quite a few in 18 months.

I know it's a bit on the practical side, but how about a really good quality first aid kit, or a decent LED torch or one of those multi purpose tools ?

Or a Nintendo DS for those boring flights / bus journeys ?

If they're off to the back of beyond, this could come in really handy . . .

I always remember my boss buying a present for a relative going around the world on his honeymoon. He got a leather belt made and had gold coins sewn into it, not sure exactly what the coins were but basically I guess it was so if they got parted from their possessions in some way then they weren't completely without IYSWIM

Or how about a wind up radio ?

At only 370 grams it shouldn't break the baggage limit.

A colleague of mine took a sabbatical and went on a round the world trip last year and I was put in charge of buying her present. I didn't have as much to spend as you, but I got her this, which she loved, and Lonely Planet guides to the areas they were planning on visiting. I also had a card made on moonpig.

Friend had one of these and said it was a godsend - weighs virtually nothing and drys in about 5 seconds flat.

I got her something like this:

(for some reason I couldn't find a UK link but most places like millets etc will stock them).

Sounds boring but a practical waterproof watch like a swatch watch

she might go diving, sunbathing etc and she'd use it everyday!

When my friend went to New Zealand for 2 years, a group of us clubbed together and got her an I-Pod, not something she'd ever have bought herself. We all recorded a message for her and my friend put the messages on to the i-pod along with lots of photos of home.

If you know where she's going I'd organise something really luxurious once she's been going about a month. That's probably when homesickness will kick in and if they're travelling omn the cheap it will be a lovely treat.

If you do want to go down the travel wallet route I've got this one which is lovely. I've also got the passport cover but in all honesty it's a bit of an arse as you have take it out at immigration anyway.

    sorry, links aren't working http://www.aspinaloflondon.com/eshop-catalogue/ladies-collection/travel-accessories/leather-travel-wallets/2446-deluxe-travel-wallet-in-smooth-cognac-and-stone-suede

Wow thanks everyone, that is really helpful. They aren't exactly slumming it when they go, they have decided to stay in hotels rather than hostels etc. She already has Ipod, Nintendo DS and a mountain of travel guides as they have been saving/planning this trip for 4 years ...think the journal will be really useful and defo the torch etc.

    thanks everyone.
