Present for someone I barely know

Knownowt, 24 November, 2008 at 06:31 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

Can you think of an idea everyone likes? I need a cheap (tenner-ish) present for my SIL's boyfriend. He is mid-40s, sort of erudite but I'm not sure where his interests lie, antique dealer, straggly hair, bit of a stoner. Mustn't be food or drink-related. I am considering this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Numerati-Which-Theyll-Number-Yours/dp/0224080563/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1227507964&sr=8-1 on the basis that anyone who is still a straggly-haired stoner in his 40s will enjoy a good conspiracy book about the power of big business. I've no idea really though. Can you think of anything?

ETA- do you like this http://www.wheredidyoubuythat.com/product_details.php?category_id=80&item_id=150 (not a suggestion for SIL's boyfriend but someone else). I sort of love it, sort of think it's hideous.

The book wouldn't float my particular boat but I'm not a 40-something, antique-dealing stoner. If you barely know him, surely it's the thought that counts and if he's got any manners, he'll enthuse politely. Unless your SIL can suggest something he'd like, anything you get him will be a wild stab in the dark until you know him better.

As for the other, I rather like it. It's quirky and functional.

    Love the breadbin.

If you really don't know him, could you make a bit of a joke of it and go for cheesy, standard-issue Christmas pressies for men - Old Spice, hankies, socks, etc?

Sorry, that's probably a rubbish idea. Why are food or booze related things out? It's probably the safest bet.

    I like the bread bin!

If you don't know him too well then the book is probably a safe bet.

Personally I love comedic charity shop presents, but the recipient has to have the same sense of humour. Our most recent present of this ilk was for a neighbours 50th. He is a golf loving Irishman with a very good sense of humour. We brought him a large ceramic nun from the hospice shop which had a pose that allowed it to be used as a golf club holder (the charity shop had one for £1). We also threw in a Val Doonican album. It was a *** to wrap but he loved it.

Thanks everyone ? Shall have a think. The bread bin is quite love/hate, I think- always a risky present, hmmmm.

Socks etc aren't a bad idea. Food is out because I'm already giving him and SIL a joint foodie present. Booze is out because he is an ex-drinker.
