Presents Etiquette

babybl00, 6 February, 2014 at 11:54 Posted on Planning 0 8

We get married on 01st March and have not set up a gift list or asked for anything as we neither need nor want anything 9other than to get married) and I would have been perfectly happy if we didn't receive anything. However, my mum text me last night to say a couple of presents have been dropped off with her and a friend who can't make the wedding dropped a present into my work this morning. I'm over the moon of course and think it's lovely of them but what's the etiquette on this- do we open them now and send thank you cards or wait until after the wedding?

We waited until after the wedding for gifts that were given to us beforehand, and send thank you cards out afterwards.

We also sent a picture to those who couldn't attend but sent us a card/gift along with a note thanking them for the gift, we were sorry they couldn't come etc.

Phew, I thought I was coming into another 'is it ok to ask for money' thread then!

I would wait until after the wedding to send a card. Otherwise it would feel like opening a present before christmas.

^^ This! I was almost scared to open the post.

I would definitely wait until after the wedding although the to do list on here advises sending your thank yous before the wedding. For me, it would be like tempting fate - if I open that gift and send a thankyou, something will go wrong and the wedding will be cancelled - aaaghhh!! So, after the wedding x

Thank you! I get what you mean about the tempting fate thing. Although we have specified we are not looking for presents I know there are people who will get you one regardless & I am so touched & delighted but I didn't expect anything before the wedding & certainly not from people who couldn't make it. Glad the consensus though is after the wedding- just didn't want people to think I had been rude by not sending a thank you card promptly.

Haha I was worried about this too! We do seem to have had a lot of those lately.

OP, it seems you already have your answer now, but just thought I'd say I agree! ?

We've had a few very organised relatives buy us gifts already and I didn't want them to think me ignorant so I've got Mum and Gran to make it known that we are grateful and will be sending out personal thank yous after the wedding.

Could you drop the gift givers a text/email/phone call just to say you got the gifts and are very grateful and that you will be waiting until after the wedding to open any you receive?
