Hi Sherrie We want a 3 tier square cake. Nothing to fancy maybe just decorated with piping and a few sugar paste flowers, probably calla lilies. And some raspberry ribbon! X

Hi Chidders do you mind if I piggyback on this thread?! I'm looking for a square cake too. Only thing I know is that I'd like really square, sharp edges rather than rounded ones!

sorry about the quality of the pic. we are having something like this. having the basic cake made by a lady local to us for around £100. have already bought the large butterflies to decorate it and me and my mum will be making the small icing butterflies. also might be having purple ribbon to match our colours not sure yet.

Hi piggyback away! Ah ha I have learnt something about the edges this evening. There are two types of icing, sugar Paste and royal something or other! The sugar paste has the rounded corners and the royal one has sharper edges. The last cake maker I spoke to didn't do the sharper edges. Hope this helps x

Ooh that does help - I had no idea! Had a feeling not all cake makers would do the sharp edges. Are you going for sponge or fruit? We quite fancy a lemon sponge I think. Thought it might go quite nicely with a spring wedding. x

Yum yum lemon sponge! I think we would have a lemon sponge and a plain sponge and a little fruit one on top. I think we will have some guests who would prefer fruit, my parents for a start! It is slightly more expensive for fruit. It would have to be on a stand in that case to have the fruit on top, bit I think I prefer that to the stacking. So many decisions, I'm just not sure! X

My daughter wanted a 3 tier cake, square with sharp edges in sponge. The cake maker said it was unlikely that she would be able to get very sharp edged icing on a sponge and that she could probably only do it on a fruit cake.

Kharv, its royal icing to create those square edges - a thick consistencey that can be built up and shaped with a pallet knife to achieve a more angled look. This is easily achievable using a sponge cake, as long as its dense enough not to crumble! It just takes a while to get the edges perfect, but if you look on american cake websites this is the effect they usually go for - Ive even made a cake like this with buttercream on lemon sponge cake! x

Got to say - you should consider doing it for a business! They're fab! Would you consider making them for the wider public?! Might send you an email at some point once I've figured out what I want if it's something you fancied doing? x
