problem cats!

PinkPrincess07, 18 June, 2012 at 18:10 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 10

HI

Does anyone have a problem with their own cats spraying indoors?? I try and keep the place as clean as possible and keep noticing spray on the side of our sofa, up the hallway door and on the kitchen side this morning! its disgusting and I am fed up with constantly checking and cleaning up the mess!!

Any ideas would be really welcome!

    Have they been 'done' ?

Problem with cat pee is once it's there, the cats will do it more and more in the same place as they can smell it so it needs to be cleaned very thoroughly. There are various things you can get to spray on the areas that are meant to deter cats but I've never had to use them myself so couldn't comment on how well they work.

Getting them 'done' is the best way of preventing it, so if they're not, I'd sort that pretty quickly.

If they already are, then it might be worth trying something like the below...I only had to use it when one of my cats had a bad stomach and was sick a lot, but it definitely got rid of the smell. Not sure how well it would work with spray but it's worth a go.

Try using feliway. It is a plug-in diffuser which gives out a pheromone that helps cats to feel more settled. This can help particularly with cats who spray due to nerves.

We use one of those sprays which takes the odour away, but find we have to reapply it regularly. We also don't let her in unless we are in the house.

Seconding the feliway diffuser they take a couple of weeks to work but can work wonders. can you pinpoint why he is stressed? eg being bullied by another cat or has something changed in the house like furniture being moved around as this can sometimes trigger anxiety. You will need a really strong cleaner to get the scent out of where he is spraying too.

Prepare some sand soil, next time, put its poo into the sand soil, then let it smell, after some times, it can remember itself odor, and will pee and poo at the certain place. just try it.

I had a little kitten and she gept spraying on our beds (well it was full on weeing!) we asked the vet and she told us it was her showing us affection ? I really cant remember how we dealt with it (apart from putting waterproof sheets on the bed and numerous trips to the laundrette) but im sure if you call the vet they will be able to help. We used one of those diffusers on our other cat who was a bit stressed and it worked a treat.

    Hi

We had same problem with my ginge, after he was done... firstly take him to the vets to make sure he hasn't got a water infection, we did this last week with ours and he was fine, just a naughty habit...

My ginge always did it on the sofa... then started to do it up stairs, if my OH let him in our room in a morning, and I wasn't up when he wanted me to he would try to do it on the side table.

We don't have a cat flap (renting) but he is allowed out whenever he wants... and they don't like to be out on a night.. sleep just like humans!

I do have another cat so I put it down to that... even though he adores her.

I now have 2 cat litter trays out always... I instantly change the litter when they use them. I bought some detterant spray from pets at home... it was £6 for the spray and has a really strong lemon sent... but seems to be working.

I used to tell him off... now I never do because your just making them more distressed... so he will carry on... Ive started to instantly play with him if he lifts his tail up and this is working... I honestly think he's learnt to do it as an attention thing aswell.

    xxx

I'd recommend the Feliway too. Always found eBay the cheapest - far cheaper than pet shops.

Someone said something about litter trays. Cats are very fussy about their trays & don't like them if they are dirty. I had a lot of trouble with my old cat until I got a second tray. Worked a treat. They say you should have a tray for every cat in the house plus another (so 3 cats = 4 trays).
