Problem deciding on a dress......help! (A few pics)

Ditzy Chick, 16 February, 2010 at 10:04 Posted on Planning 0 11

Morning ladies, hope you're planning's going well. I need (some more) honest hither's opinions please.

This is my second wedding, first time round was quite a big showy affair - ex was very showy had to have the biggest/best/newest all the while, so I had a big princess-type gown (it was so big I had to take the skirt off everytime I wanted to pee - soz!) and whilst it was a beautiful gown, if I'd shopped around for a little while longer I think I'd have picked something else.

However, this is my H2B's first wedding. We are quite informal and relaxed people, and H2B has said that I can have whatever I want for our day as long as he can wear a waistcoat (lol bless him!). Last night H2B said that he doesnt want me to think that just because this is my second wedding I should be a bit 'off the wall' and do things differently, as this is his first time getting married and he wants it to feel like a proper wedding. Which leaves me in a pickle because instead of a big flouncy dress like last time, I want something like this;

I dont want the bolero or gloves, but I do want the big petticoat underneath. (I cant afford this exact Ian Stuart dress, I'd probably have something similar made instead). One big reason for wanting a shorter dress is that I'm having a pair of Jimmy Choos and I want to show them off.

I am now extremely worried that H2B wont think of me as a bride, and is epecting me to turn up in something big and flouncy.

Honest opinions, what would you do; go with the big gown because he epects it, or something that suits your personality?

Thanks, Lou x

    I love that dress, and I tried it on, but didn't really fit me all that well because I'm quite short. One thing I remember is that the bolero contributed quite a large chunk to the price, so missing it off made the dress cheaper (maybe £900ish compared to £1200 but I can't remember exactly). In the end I went with a similar dress so that I can have the big petticoat and show off my shoes! I have to say that I still feel very much like a bride in it, and much more comfortable than in a long flouncy dress. So I say go for what you want ?

    I think your pictured dress is stunning, I really like it and I wouldnt think of it as anything less than "bridal". Shorter dresses are absolutely fab and I very nearly ordered the Ian Stuart tea length Cabaret dress that I *think* you are talking about, please, please, go for what YOU want, your H2B will not care on the day what kind of dress you have as he will be too busy being overwhelmed by how great you look as a whole.

    I am sure Tahdah will be along in a moment to flash her fabulous tea length wedding dress which was lovely, she looked great and there was not one moment where I thought "didnt look like a bride because she had a shorter dress"! follow your personality and get the dress YOU WANT

    Good luck

    Wow ditzy, I could have written that post myself 18 months ago.

    I did the big church wedding at Ex's request - along with a load of other stuff - in a gold dress the first time around. But for my second time I wanted to be more 'me' thus making it more special. Also it was Mr Tahdah's first wedding so I wanted him to feel like it was his day too, and not an excuse for me to go all out...I think we found a happy medium.

    I went for a calf length (ballerina style) dress, I would have REALLY loved a Candy Anthony dress, but my budget would stretch to that...and throughout my planning I found lots of dresses in a similar style to yours, that I would have loved to wear.

    In the end I went for this one; and put a big pink petticoat underneath - it wasn't too 'out there' and it wasn't too 'traditional'.

    If you have any questions etc. Just shout x

    Thank you both! I dont think I'd feel any less 'bridal' in a knee-length dress, I'm just a bit worried that he's gonna feel 'cheated' out of a bride lol.

    Flutterbye, what shoes are you having? I'll find a picture of the ones I want. Also, what are you thinking of having for the men's suits? I was thinkning something along the lines of this;

    but with a very small-patterned waistcoat and I'm leaning towards a very pale pink tie. I'm also thinking, pink, grey and cream as my colours?

    And (sorry, more q's) would you have a very very very pale pink petticoat under your dress, or would you stick to white/ivory/the colour of your dress?

    OMG Tadah! you look beautiful! That is exactly what I was thinking (even down to personalising the dress with a sash to match one of my theme colours, although I'm still leaning towards knee-length) and you answered my petticoat question before I'd even posted my reply lol.

    I would definitly be going with a pale pink petticoat - or even one that alternates pink/white, I can send you the name of the lady that made mine if you like.

    Please stop worrying about what your OH is going to think, your dress will be white/ivory, you'll be carrying a bouquet of some description (presumably) and you'll be there on the day to marry him...sweetie, he'll be chuffed to bits!!! Go with what you really want otherwise you might always be thinking...IF ONLY..., because if you're happy, then he'll be over the moon!

    I don't think your OH will feel cheated out of a bride! After all, it's not like you're going for something completely out of the ordinary. And even if you did, I'm sure he will just be happy to be marrying you!

    My dress has a cherry red sash and red petticoat! I didn't want to go for completely ivory, so the splashes of red will be great Smiley smile I love these shoes, but they're a bit pricey and I'm hoping that I can find something similar once all the spring/summer shoes get into the shops:

    Thanks Tahdah that would be great - can you still email through hitched or do you need my address?

    Flutterbye, those shoes are amazing. I'm sure you'll find something similar in somewhere like faith, office, dunes, next(?)

    These are the shoes I saw on Sunday

    The lady, in the Choo consession in Selfridges Birmingham, said that I can go and try them on any time I like with no obligation to buy... I'm either going to be moving into the consessin I'll be there so often or I'm going to have to work out how I can get my wedding to take place in Selfridges!!

    Tahdah that is a great picture ? Very similar to the look I am going for!

    And those shoes are lovely Ditzy Chick, you definitely need a short dress to show them off ? With silver shoes I definitely think a pink (or other colour) petticoat would work.

    I'm sure I'll find similar shoes in a couple of months, although there's nothing in the shops right now.
