Problem family in the area - solutions?

barongreenback, 20 April, 2008 at 17:48 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 11

So it seems as if a problem family have moved into the area. Last night some small trees in our front garden were trampled and broken and a neighbour's fence was also broken. I understand that they live in local authority housing. We're quite close to a playground hence we're an obvious target. Another neighbour chased the kids away but that's the only evidence we have - the children involved are 10 apparently. The last person to complain was roundly sworn at by the fishwife mother and apparently the Matthews family seem to make this lot seem civilised.

My first instinct is to set up a webcam to catch the little bastards in the act but if I do, are there any options? I'd rather do this as discreetly as possible to avoid any potential neighbours from hell scenarios ?

    Electric fence?

are you having a council election soon? if so i'd contact the police and report the damage and if no joy your councillor might be keen to help...

Do they have a dog? did they ask to borrow your car? did you recently call a neighbour a bitch? ?

There are elections in a couple of weeks so I'm hoping someone will take notice. Much as I'd live to get the police involved I get the feeling that next door neighbour is less than keen to stand up and be counted as she (rightly imo) thinks her son would be victimised by these kids.

Nick - the coincidence is startling ?

I'd report it to the police in the first instance - criminal damage, innit? Ask their advice on the best way to proceed thereafter.

Will definitely be calling the police - I'm determined to stop this now before it gets worse.

IMHO these things never do "get better" you just adapt and get better at switching off around these apologetic excuses for humanity.

    Give 'em enough rope!

Incidentally, one of the less desirables in our local area was caught siphoning diesel from his works van and using it in his car. Guess who no longer has a job. YIPPEE!

They bought their council house a few years ago, and have been steadily raising their borrowing against it. I wonder how long it will take him to get another job? I've heard the job market is rather slow at the moment too.

Be careful with the webcam option, my friend's husband filmed a gang of kids outside his house and they saw it...the next thing one of the parents were banging on calling him a peodphile etc and called the police on him!

If you can find which housing authority or housing group they are with it might be worth putting a complaint in with them as well. Most authorities have a section in their contracts about ASB, if they will take any notice however is a different matter.

It's going to be installed in my porch so it will look like standard security measures. Not a cheap option but I'm determined to keep the little fcukers away from my property.

Sounds like a good plan along with asking for police advice. Perhaps keep a detailed diary of the little darlings' anti-social behaviour?

Its horrible having problem neighbours, I do hope you're able to deal with it soon.

Most local authority and for that matter housing associations have an anti-social behaviour department. If you contact them they will send you a diary to fill in. Some even have a 24 hour helpline, I found phoning the 24 hour line to log incidents as well as logging them in the diary was helpful.

Thankfully, my nuisance neighbour was evicted 4 months ago.
