Problems with the best man wanting to wear something different to the others!!!!!

WoozySoozy, 29 January, 2012 at 22:31 Posted on Planning 0 19

I am new on here and have only just started planning our September wedding. Only a couple of weeks have passed and we already have our first problem!!!

We have yet to book the mens suits, but the Best Man (the OH's brother) has decided he wants to wear a kilt. He was born in Scotland, but moved to Wales when he was one.

The OH and ushers are going to have chocolate brown suits and I think the best man should have the same, otherwise its going to look odd.

I am going to book an appointment for next month and will have to tell him No, he has to have the same as everyone else. As we are paying for them I don't think this is too unreasonable - we are on a tight budget and the kilt is more expensive to hire.

Am I overreacting and should I just let him go ahead or am I within reason to say no and he wears a suit like the others?

Hi another Septemebr bride here ! what date is your big day? Are we date twins?

I would talk to him and explain your reason for all the suits wanting to be the same. If it we're me and I was paying he wears what you tell him. It's not that you are asking him to wear something unreasonable.

He can wear a kilt at his own wedding! For your wedding, what you say goes!

If your paying and you want them to match then stick to your guns! in saying that i read a thread on here a while ago where someone had a scottish guest who 'always wore kilts to weddings' and wanted to wear one...it depends if your BM is just being akward or this is a tradition of his?? if you do let him wear it i would ask for the extra money it will cost you!! personally i wouldn't want him to incase he took the edge off my H2B but if it's something he feels strongly about i don't know....maybe say we are paying for this...if you want a kilt you will have to pay for your outfit (all of it) i'm pretty sure this would put him off as he would rather have his outfit paid for!! if he wants his scottish roots to be seen how obout suggesting a tartan hanky or something similar? x

I think, to be honest, your best man is being rather selfish. It is your wedding and you are paying for the wedding party's outfits. Therefore, it is yours and your OH's wishes that matter here.

What does your OH think about it?

It's your wedding, you are paying, and he should be honoured to be asked to be Best Man...in my opinion he should wear what he is told to wear.

***within reason obviously, pink tutus may be a bit much ?***

It's like the bridesmaids - you wouldn't let one of them wear a tartan dress when the others are all in aqua or something. Explain to him that you have chosen the suits and that is what he will be required to wear. If he doesn't like it and can't understand that it's your day, not his, he doesn't sound like a great Best Man.

Can't believe he is expecting to wear what he wants! tell him its your wedding and not his, if you have a moh and bridesmaids remind him that they will be wearing what you choose. the grooms men should match, if someone should stand out it should be the groom if anything!

Personally, I'd sack him if he's going to be such a drama queen.

Thanks for all your comments on this ... I am going to tell him NO, there will be no kilts and he will have to have a suit like the others. I don't think it is being unreasonable, its my (and the OH) big day.

I know they had been to a wedding recently so I had a quick look to see if there were any photos on FB ... and lo and behold he was wearing a suit so its not like he makes a habit of wearing one.

I love the suggestion of a tartan hanky if he really wants to demonstrate his Scottish roots.

OH is quite quiet on the subject as he doesn't want to upset his brother but now agrees that he should be wearing a suit ... going to have a word with him tonight so he can put his foot down!!!!

(I am already in the OH's family badbooks as I don't like some of their 'helpful suggestions!!!!)

    xx
