Pub for a reception venue?

Turnham2b, 27 March, 2009 at 19:51 Posted on Planning 0 12

We are considering a local (gastro-) pub for a reception venue the owner has offered to hire us the whole place for just the price per head for the meal (which is much cheaper than where we were considering!), but is it a bit weird to have a reception in a pub?

Short answer - no. Sounds great to me.

Love that idea.... the formality of some venues, I think, can sometimes put a dampner on the celebrations and may not be a true representation of the couple.

I'm having my reception in a pub and everyone we've spoken to is so excited about it. I think people like the fact that its relaxed and friendly and they know they can just enjoy it. We're going for a barbecue in the garden followed by a disco.

As a guest I'd love that. If you want an informal relaxed wedding it's perfect and the price of drinks will probably be cheaper than a hotel which any guest would appreciate. x

No! Deffinatly not - it will be fab!!

The management will know they will make a fairly hefty wack out of drink sales, so im sure they will be happy to cater to your every need.

Also, your guests will really relax too!

    Hi ya

Before I started Finesse, my husband and I owned a gastro pub/restaurant where we would host weddings and it went down brilliantly. It was for those who wanted something more relaxed without the cost hike.

We would charge a venue hire fee too though, so you've definately got a good deal there! Also, you don't have to worry about your guests paying over the odds for their drinks and with the new licensing laws that came in a few years ago, they may be licensed to serve drinks 24 hours (bit much) but it could mean that you can stipulate when you would like the party to finish and not the other way round.

The weddings we held at our pub were some of my favourites. I would definately go for it!

One thing though, have they done weddings before? If not it may be worth looking into getting an On The Day co-ordinator to act as a venue/wedding manager to ensure everything runs as it should.

Three of my friends have had their receptions in pubs and all have been lovely - like everyone else said, much more relaxed and a lovely atmosphere.

One of my friends had her wedding at Imbibe in London. One of my top 5 weddings of all time!

    Hi

Not at all! We had our wedding reception in a lovely country pub and it was great! All our guests loved it..so did we! And a big bonus is the drinks at the bar are SOOOOO MUCH cheaper. The food, atmosphere and staff were great and they even had an outdoor seating area with a little park for the children at the end of their grounds!

I guess that the answer is in the pub in question(avoid the Queen Vic in Albert Square....I have heard that they have several "issues" there?....... Seriously though, FWIW, I have photographed many wedding receptions in pubs and they have been great. Some have decent gardens for the photography too.

We're having our reception in our local pub and everyone is really looking forward to it! We're having a buffet which has really kept costs down, and because it's our local i know it's going to be a relaxed atmosphere!
