Pudding help please

Knownowt, 14 March, 2009 at 15:59 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 8

Hmmm, am having a v informal supper thing on Tuesday. No starter. Main course will be pastitsio and green salad. I would like to do some sort of pudding. Needs to be very quick, light enough after heavy main course, not prissy and fussy and, importantly, contain no booze. Everything that has the requisite informality (plonk it on table and help yourself stylee) also seems a bit heavy.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

This goes down very well, light and refreshing, just a bit of cream to serve with it.

Tiramasu, served in a big help yourself bowl

    Lemon posset

    Strawberry mousse

Creme brulee (again you could do it in a bigger bowl, made in advance and blowtorched at the last minute)

    Ummm...

I don't know if this is the kind of thing you mean, but for a 'plonk it in the middle and help yourself' dessert recently, with no real prep beforehand, I did homemade meringues (plain and hazelnut, made the night before) with a bowl of whipped cream and fresh berries.

Another was waffle ice cream sundaes with Nigella's hot choc peanut fudge sauce in a small jug on the table. A few rasperries smashed into the bottom of a sundae glass topped with a scoop of choc ice cream and 2 scoops of vanilla. Also scattered inside was torn up pieces of warmed belgian waffle. I made this for 6 and it's easy of course (no cooking!) but a faff if you're doing it for larger numbers.

A tray of brownies, with ice-cream and berries/sauces if you can be bothered.

What about rhubarb fool? More seasonal than berries at this time of year:

    I like Nigella's take on it: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2002/dec/08/shopping.foodanddrink1

Halva ice cream. Get some good vanilla ice cream and some halva and some pistachios. Bash halva up, toast pistachios a bit, soften ice cream and mix all together, possibly with some rosewater added.
