qq re adopting a rescue cat.

Mrs Jmc, 9 November, 2008 at 16:14 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

We are looking at getting a cat and I would prefer to get one from a rescue centre.

Just been looking at the website for our local one and some of the info on cats say they have tested negative for FIV/FeLV.

What is this?

We got two 10 week old rescue kittens a couple of weeks ago, and were told all the rescue cats(coming in to this charity) are dewormed and given anti tick and flea treatment as soon as they arrive and are then vaccinated for FIV and FeLV etc. The cat charity also pay for the second shot of vaccine and for the neutering when the kittens are 6 months old. They are absolutely amazing!

I love my kittens and would recommend anyone to go for rescue animals!

That is true about what Fiv and Felv are - yes you can vaccinate against Felv but in the UK there is no vaccine for FIV.

Both are transmitted through contact with other cats. Felv mainly through fighting etc and FIV through body fluids - so generally mating and fighting.

If a cat contracts FIV it can't be cured and will shorten that cats life. Felv - most cats will keep the virus and it usually results in them developing cancer at a later date. Occasionallt the body can fight the virusand they can get rid of it.

It might be worth trying one of the breed specific rescue homes as a lot of pedigrees are raised a house cats. I know the more 'general' rescue homes don't tend to have as many house cats.

We have a rescue Ragdoll and she is so gorgeous. She is a house cat but we do let her have supervised access to our garden, mostly in the summer, this time of the year she rarely goes out.
