Is a lace up dress more supportive than a zip up or does it not matter?

I asked my dress lady this as I was torn between lace up and zip & button... she did say lace up is more supportive as you can really pull it tighter... although in the end I decided to go with the buttons because I thought it looked neater. I guess if you have good undies on it wouldn't really matter!

I think a lace up is very supportive and helps to pull your waist in. However a zip up can also be supportive if quite fitted, which they usually are. I had a zip up and it was fine. I wore a strapless bra but probably could have gone without if I wanted to as it was close fitting.

Are you dress shopping yet? I think try on both and see how you feel, but remember the fit might not be quite right when you try on and final fittings will ensure a good supportive fit with most dresses.

I have been told that a lace up dress will provide more support as it can be pulled in at different places. My bridal shop has even recommended that I don't wear any underwear with my lace up dress (which for someone with a larger chest feels like a big risk but they are confident that when I go for my fitting I will agree). For me a lace up dress was important to allow my weight to be more flexible as I am still trying to lose another half a stone at least. I haven't actually tried on any zip up dresses in my size as they don't seem to stock samples in an 18 anywhere so can't comment on the amount of support they provide from personal experience.

    Thank you.

I have already brought my dress, I'm due my first fitting anyday. It is a zip up but I've given the option to turn it into lace up if I want to...will decide after I have tried it on.

I would say a lace up as they tend to loosen during the day, I have seen so many Brides yanking at the top of their dress as the day goes on!

A lace up (corset) dress definitely holds you in tighter as it can be manipulated by you to whatever tightness you want.

I always advise brides to get a strong person to cinch them in properly as it makes the waist look fabulous if this is done properly.

I have a button-back dress, but it has an internal corset, so is the best of both worlds Smiley smile I really wanted a button-back dress, with or without zip, as I just love the way they look!

Mine's a zip up but feels pretty supportive - I'm planning on wearing it without a bra and I'm a 32ff, so it would need to provide pretty decent support in order for me to even consider it!

I think done properly both can give you the support you need. I am going with Lace because depending on time of month my weight flutuates so lace up for me will mean I have a few inches just in case...

I had a lace up dress and it was very supportive. I didn't have to 'hoik' it up once during the day. OK, I've not got much up top, but it didn't gape when I leant forwards as some do, and I wasn't wearing a bra, so that was a relief. I felt very safe in it. Always try the 'lifting arms above the head' manouvre to make sure nothing pops out though! Also, with a lace up style, you have a bit of movement for weight gain or loss. I can't vouch for zips or buttons, but they might not be so forgiving.

I had a lace up and it was mega supportive. I'm a 34E and never once did I feel unsupported and it was fantastic not to have a bra on. With a bra it was really uncomfortable because the boning from the corset pushed into the underwired bra and ouch ouch ouch.

All I'd say about a lace up is that they can be uncomfortable. If you want it to provide support, hold boobs in place, give you a tiny waist etc then to do their job it needs to be tight and that means you are very snug in there. I was desperate to get out of my dress at 3am because it was just so restrictive because of all the boning. I wouldn't have changed it for the world though....a girl needs to look her best and no pain no gain!
