QQ re; engagement presents

Polo, 15 August, 2009 at 20:10 Posted on Planning 0 7

I'm an old married and can't remember what I was given when we got engaged so I thought I would ask you guys. If you were given engagement presents, which ones were your favourites and why?

My best friend has just got engaged and I wanted to get her/them something really special (not too worried about budget). My first idea was to find a good copy of Shakespeare's love sonnets - what do you think?

OH's mum bought us a mirror for out lounge, apart from that we didn't get anything apart from cards. We'd set a date for our wedding within a fortnight of getting engaged so perhaps people didn't see the point whe they'd most likely be getting a wedding one in less than 8 months time?

I've only ever send cards to even my closest friends. If they have a party and put on food and drink then I'd probably buy them a little something. It kind of feels like celebrating the same event twice to me. But then maybe I'm just stingy! ?

Sorry, not much help was I!

We got a table from my mum and dad and then cards from family but no other gifts. I don't think engagment presents are necessary but i think the book sounds like a lovely idea esp, as she's a close friend

We threw a big house party to celebrate and most people brought champagne and/or flowers - which was lovely as I wasn't expecting anything. What meant the most though were the cards that I've kept. My best friends got together and wrote a silly poem for us, which they performed and I love to this day Smiley laugh. Obviously, it works better with our real names substituted!

It's about time this happened we say

We were starting to think Mr.FF was gay!

He got down on one knee

    So fancyfree could be

The right height for a roll in the hay.

    Hooray for our favourite pair

We thought you would never get there.

    Fancyfree showed him who's boss

    (Bribed him with lip gloss)

That'd do it for me I declare!

Now Fancyfree and Mr.FF are pledged

As a couple they are fully fledged.

    I was in shock

At the size of that rock -

I can only assume Mr.FF is wedged.

Mr.FF's taken his foot off the brakes,

Fancyfree makes such exceedingly good cakes,

    So do we hear

    A wedding is near?

Or a dirty weekend in The Lakes?

To Mr.FF and fancyfree we toast

The couple that we like the most

    Fancyfree has her bling bling

    A big diamond ring

Is my wedding invite in the post?

Sorry it's taken me a little while to come back and thank you for your replies.

I know presents aren't essential for an engagement but I really do want to mark this for her in a special way, so might go for the sonnets then.

FF, that poem is fab. You have some good friends, obviously.

We just got quite a few things: a bottle of champagne, a pair of 'engagement' flutes, photo frames, an 'engagement' photo album. The best present was a 'wedding fund' money box with a lovely poem on the back, and it was one of those ones that can't be opened unless you break it. So we've put a bit of money in there to go towards our honeymoon.

We didn't get much at all and had no engagement party... boo hoo!

Got a love spoon from my nan, some cards, and very very nice Danish duvet from one of my BMs and her mum. Also got some vouchers from one of Nan's friend but saving those for our Hypothetical new house.

    thats about it.

We had an engagement party as we got engaged in 2006 and knew we wouldn't be actually getting married for at least another 3-4 years, so wanted some way of celebrating. We mostly got cash (in fact the total amount was nearly £1000, people were so generous) but we also got some really useful things for the flat (we hadn't actually moved in yet but were looking around) like towels, pots and pans, glasses, M&S vouchers etc - although none of those things are exactly exciting! So for your best friend I think the sonnet idea is lovely. I would love a present like that, but then I'm into Shakespeare so it would be right up my street. ?

We got a few things, but mostly money to start saving for our house. We also got salt and pepper shakers in the shape of elephants with magnetic trunks that stick together which i love, some tea towels, a lovely photoframe from my parents old neighbours, some vouchers for debenhams which were also saving to use on the house. i think thats it. Its all being kept at MIL's house for now so i can't remember if there was anything else. we got lots of lovely cards too which i keep in a lovely box i got from WH Smiths.
