QQ - reasonable or unreasonable? Opinions please.

H had his driving test scheduled for today, he'd waited 8 weeks for it after failing his first one in May and had a refresher lesson last week, plus one booked for last night. He got home from work yesterday to a letter from the DSA saying that 'due to unforeseen circumstances' his test had been cancelled and re-booked for 26th September.

I think this is absolutely terrible as he had no notice and consequentially has wasted £27 on his refresher lesson last week, was too late to cancel his driving lesson for last night so that's another £27 and was too late to cancel his holiday for today so has 'wasted' a day off work.

Ironically in the letter it told him that if he cancels at any point after 22nd September he will forfeit the test fee due to unaceptably short notice of cancellation.

I think he should write a letter of complaint (he's tried phoning several times only to be met with a recorded message saying how the queues are really long and to save his phone bill, they would prefer to cut him off and then they do) but he thinks there is no point' I accept that there is probably no point (in terms of getting any money back etc) but think there are genuine points to be made here on their appalling level of customer service. Thoughts anyone?

Inconvenient and a pain yes. but i dont see how the money on the refresher course is "wasted" money. how could it be?

anyway, if he wasnt such a hapless git in the first place, he d have passed, so no sympathy.

If they cancel it on the day (been there, done that) they give you money back towards the lesson you had to pay for (for use of the instructors car), but i don't think you've got much chance in getting the money back if they've cancelled a future one by letter. the lesson will help him pass in the end, surely?

but i feel his pain - took me quite a few (cough seven cough) goes, and delays from DVLA's side made me feel crappy when they happened.

edited to say - might be worth ringing up/looking online to see if you can get a cancellation to bring it forwards, that's always good.

Hmm. I can see he might be frustrated but these things do happen. And surely, as NickJ says, the refresher lesson isn't wasted. And he has had an unexpected free day to do as he pleases with! I wouldn't be writing to complain, but might call them and ask if there's a possibility of an earlier test date, under the circumstances, maybe a cancellation?

I agree its inconvenient but if an examiner is ill, what more can they do? If they keep more standby examiners on the books, then the test fee will increase to meet the cost and its already incredibly expensive.

If my pupils get a late test cancellation then I wouldn't charge them for cancelling a lesson at short notice so have a chat with his instructor. Any lessons taken already will not be wasted if your OHs instructor is any good, any practice is good practice.

Keep ringing, cancellations come up all the time. If you ring or check online often enough then you should get one in the next few weeks.

I don't understand what difference the test being cancelled had on his lessons. Surely he's been having lessons between the last test and this one to improve his skills, what's the point of just going again with only one lesson in between ?

The lessons he had been having between may and the test being cancelled will not be wasted, they will be more driving experience for him.

As for the test being cancelled a driving instructor may have become ill or a family problem.

If your husband goes on the dvla website he can check for cancellations,i got one after my test was cancelled(on the day i was at the test centre) for a week later.

His day was not wasted as he would have had 1 hour lesson, then a 35 minute test,so he would have spent the rest of the time on holiday.

Small matter of fear, shaking legs and consequently kangaroo-style bouncing ? i eventually resigned myself to failure, stopped worrying and thus passed.

a friend of mine bettered my record though, took her 13 goes. she drives an old volvo, with a number of chunks missing.

I've just noticed you're in Brum and wondered which test centre your OH is booking at? Does he know the new multi purpose test centre has just opened and has pretty much no waiting list at all? Might be worth considering.
