Question about flowergirl dress sizes...

Polkadots_and_Pincurls, 24 May, 2013 at 21:50 Posted on Planning 0 6

Hi all, quick q- Ive seen some lovely flowergirl dresses currently on sale, but my wedding's not for two years. My daughters will be 3 1/2 and 8 1/2, and the dresses only come in every two year sizes- so the younger one will be fine in a size 3 to 4 year dress, but the older ones are either size 7 to 8 years or 9 to 10 years... what do you think I should do? My daughter is very slim / athletic build and has always been tall for her age but hasnt had a growth spurt in a while. Which size is easier to alter if need be? Or shall I just hold fire and if they go off sale, so be it? Advice please!

At 3 1/2 neither of my daughters fit a 3-4 formal dress. (or maybe they are just not made the right length for my eyes!). The younger one will be fine, a longer dress will still fit just fine because girls dresses don't look wrong wherever the waistline is. Neither of my daughters are 81/2 yet. BUT my 7 year old is starting to show where her waist may well be in 2-4 years (?). I'd be a bit wary about buying for her in a year or so (she is also very tall).

Style wise - the girls simple top body with a BIG skirt is probably the easiest/. Because girls can get away with it being loose - if its not intended to be floor length then it is easier (if its to the floor now, then it should probably workish.

But unless its the most amazing bargain (likely to make money on ebay) i'd probably wait !

Hmm, that is food for thought... I didnt take lengths etc into account, I was just thinking waist size... ooh I dont know what to do! Its a very good bargain and its the exact dress I want as they are a bit different, so harder to find. Oh dear lol.

Thankyou for your help, btw Smiley smile

My flower girls are fairly average build children but the one who will be 5 next year needs an age 7 to allow for growth, the one who will be 7 needs an age 10 for growth and the 9 year old who is quite skinny is also in an age 10. Length-wise, the 9 year old is a good bit taller than the 7 year old but once the dresses are on there is very little difference in the length of their dresses. Both just skim the floor at the moment but on the website they were little below knee length!

My 8year old nieces wear clothes for 11+year olds... I would be very vary of buying dresses for children so far in advance.

I am not getting married until next october, and I have already brought my two flower girl dresses already in the monsoon sale. Now I brought age 4-5 for my 3 year old and I brought 8-9 for my 7 year old... When I tired them on them, they just about fitted them now!!! ... So for my 7 year old I have got age 10 and for my my 3 year old I have got 5-6!!!

Now these dresses were originally £65 each but I got them in the sale for £30 for both of the , so it's not going to financially ruin me if they r to small next year. However I would go with too much fabric is better than not enough...you can always take them in Smiley smile

I've had my flower girl dresses for ages. Got them in the sale for £10.80 each so I couldn't leave them behind. I've risked it, got the sizes my girls should be. I figure if they don't fit then I've only lost out on £22, if they do fit then I've got a totally bargain. Might be worth a gamble if they are cheap enough?

Thankyou so much for your help ladies, this is really informative. I think I might risk it, but Im thinking now Ill get both the girls a size too big- it would be terrible if the 9/10 fit my 8 year old but then the 3/4 didnt fit my 3 year old, after I was so worried about the older one lol. Like you say, I can always have them taken in / up.

    Many thanks guys!
