Question about ties

Mrs Monkey, 12 April, 2013 at 21:09 Posted on Planning 0 6

When I bought my wedding dress it came with a matching sash. I'm not going to be using it so was thinking of making my OH's tie, to make his outfit different from the others, and four 'triangle hankie things' (I don't know the proper name) for them all.

I've looked online but can't find anything about how to make the 'triangle hankie things'. But that's probably because I can't get the name. Also looking up how to make a skinny tie, I can only find help on how to make normal ties into skinny ones!

Does anyone have experience with this sort of thing? Will it be too hard for me to do, or will it look really bad??

I think they are called pocket squares.

I'm sure they will look great but I've never done it so can't help. Do you know a seamstress as I can't see that costing much?

Ah pocket squares - thanks. I was trying to see if I could do it first. My sister really wants to help with something - she does a bit of sewing, so I was going to ask her to help me.

I would imagine it would be quite easy for someone who can sew. I am rubbish at that stuff!

The pocket square things that come with my suits are literally that, a suare of fabric folded into a triangle then folded again. They would be pretty easy to make if you have enough fabric Smiley smile

The pocket squares would be really easy, square of fabric and a double hem (folded over twice so you don't see the raw edge) all around the edge. And as they're really only decorative and unlikely (you'd hope) to be actually used as a hanky you'd only need to make them about 15cm square.

When I was looking up how to make a veil and petticoat I found a great tutorial for ties, which of course I can't find again!

While trying to find it though I've found this site which tells you more about ties than you're ever going to need to know - I only read the first page and know too much! http://sevenfoldties.reflexblue.org/maketie.php

This one is far more straight forward and there's a pattern to download (it's for a standard size tie but it's easy to adapt just make sure you change the pattern pieces), I think this wouldn't be too hard if you're an OK sewer. (or your sister is!) http://www.purlbee.com/fathers-day-ties/

Lastly I found this which uses an old skinny tie as a pattern but would be easier as there's no interfacing or lining or anything like that but that does mean it will be a bit floppier than a bought tie - you can see that a bit in the pictures. http://abeautifulmess.typepad.com/my_weblog/2012/04/mens-skinny-tie-diy.html

    Thanks ladies.

Mary C to be K - Thanks for the links. It is a bit of a read isn't it!! I might just send it to my sister to have a read through, I started to lose concentration. It does look a lot more complicated then I thought - I was picturing one piece cut into a giant tie, folded into the back to make a skinny tie shape and then ironed Smiley smile I don't need the sash for anything else, so if it doesn't work it's not the end of the world. If it does work then I might make my nephews tie too.

These things always seem to look really complicated, I think it's where they break it down into steps. I think it shouldn't actually be too hard to do and the one with the pattern has a pattern for kids ties too if your nephew is little.
