If you have to have it explained, you would never understand (and probably wouldn't want to) ?

Mainly it's added to show excitement...eg:

    "Reeeeeeeeeeeally happy"

There is no hard or fast rule to letter-adding, but I am a culprit. ?

But it's not "txt speak," it's more internet speak.

(I don't use "txt speak" as it irritates the tits off me.)

Du u men lyk wen mii sil sends mee txts lyk dis?

(translated: do you mean like when my SIL sends me text messages like this?)

The one i don't get at the moment is when my sister both says AND texts me 'ceeeeeebz' i had to ask what that meant. Apparently it is a 'shortened' version of 'CBA' shortened my arse, i think theyre just being annoying for the sake of it. I don't understand half of what they write in their text messages and emails these days! and i'm only 20!

I seem to have acquired a number of the children I used to babysit for as FB friends, two of them (now 15) use this terrible weird spelling, and they're both A* English students. In fact, one of them commented to the other a couple of days ago' How come two girls who love English so much spell like this on facebook' (spellings corrected by me in translation!)

My 13 year old daughter and all her silly friends do this......... I have to restrain myself from chopping her fingers off when I see her texting or emailing. She used to do it in her texts to me until I told her I wouldn't reply to them in future if she didn't 'speak' properly. She stopped.

I have asked her the reasons why and you're going to love it.

    Are you ready?

    Is your breath baited?

It's because it "makes them (the words) look pretty". Yes, really ?

I really do worry about the current "text" generation. I'm hoping it will be a youthful phase and when they reach their mid-twenties they'll snap out of it and write properly.

But what if they don't? Where will the English language be in 50 years time?

I know this makes me sound impossibly old, but I do think about it every time I read Da Kidz posts on Facebook.

Lyni CBA = can't be @rsed, i don't think its necessarily a new one as its one my parents introduced to me donkey's years ago in the phrase 'i have a bad case of the CBA's'

Auris you are kidding me right? it doesn't look pretty! it is just unreadable!

i can't believe some of the stuff that i see on facebook either. one i really loathe at the moment is 'goin out 2nyte, is gonna get messy init' and some of them are only 16 or 17, i feel like saying 'Yes it certainly will be messy when you throw up 2 litres of white lightening cider all over your mum's nice clean house'. Although to be honest i've seen this kind of update from some ex-colleagues of mine too, all of whom were in their mid to late 20's!

English as a language has constantly evolved through the ages. You only have to try reading some Chaucer or the like - it's almost incomprehensible.

But will it evolve into text speak? I really hope not. I must be really old as I just can't understand any of it. But then I can't stand bad spelling and punctuation anyway - even though I'm guilty of it myself sometimes!

txt dialect ? That really amused me. I'm South African and I can understand it perfectly (former flatmate was from the north east so some of the slang makes sense).

I don't know - English is a living language and I think as long as these kids don't expect a job application thus written to be taken seriously, let them get on with it.

Sadly I am related to a lot of northern chavs, and as a result I understand all those posts, what gets me though is not so much my teenage cousins writing like that but their parents, they're in their 40s for gods sake!! So sad!

I had an application recently with the response to why are you interested in this role being:

    'Coz i ned da £'

I had to come up with an appropriate 'rejection' letter....................very tempted to use 'soz no go at mo innit'
