Quick DIY question if I may? Carpets

KB3, 25 March, 2009 at 10:36 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 13

We are hoping to recarpet the upstairs of our house and the staircase. The entrance hall will be stripped back to the floorbaords and stained in a walnut colour to match the rest of the downstairs.

We'll be having the same colour carpet throughout upstairs and the carpet guy has asked if we'd like door strips, or for the carpet to flow through from one room to another. WWYD?

I'm also wondering whether we should carpet the whole width of the staircase or have a runner down the middle of the stairs (iyswim). Would it look odd having a runner through the stairs up to a fully carpeted landing? or would it look odd having a fully carpeted staircase leading off from floorboards in the hallway?

hhmmm....

I would have door strips personally. Can't imagine not having them, although I suppose it's easier when you're vacuuming.

And a fully carpeted stairs. That's what we have off a wooden hallway downstairs and it looks fine ?

Personally I wouldn’t carpet the stairs fully against floorboards in the hall I’d go for a runner. Not sure what he means by the flowing from room to room surely there will need to be joins somewhere ? I’d probably have strips as used to having them …

I'd have door strips and full width carpet. we have slate tiles downstairs and then a full carpet up the stairs and it looks fine. well except that the carpet needs replacing as does the mixmatch upstairs! trying to get quotes atm.

Is there like a strip at the bottom of the stairs to stop threading?

Majority say door strips, I'll go with that then. I suppose, thinking about it, it would make life easier in the future if we needed to change just one room again.

I would go for door strips and the carpet full width of the stairs (this is what we have and it looks fine)

Is the wooden floor downstairs the original floorboards or is it flooring you have laid? if you have laid it the fitter will have a tool which can put the carpet under the wooden flooring. If it is floor boards, they can "tuck" the carpet under so it doesn't fray or you can have a bar. Some places sell wooden bars to match your flooring.

Sorry just re-read and you are stripping the boards, I would ask the fitter what they recommend. Tucking it under looks neat but you can get fraying.

Can you tell I work for a flooring company!

I would also recommend having door strips - it looks much better and is easier to replace one room's carpet if necessary.

As to carpeting the whole stairs or just having a runner - both look fine but if you have a runner you will need to have the sides whipped (edged with thread the same colour as the carpet to stop it fraying)!

Yeah he mentioned something like that. I also like the look of those clips that kind of hold the carpet in place, but he said they can be expensive along with the edging of the carpet.

My mum has this in her house - she has wooden stairs painted white with a cream coloured carpet and brass stair rods. I think it looks really striking but the stair rods and the whipping to the edge of the carpet did add a fair amount to the cost.

We were going to have a stair runner, but I don't think I clean often enough and I was worried that carpet fluff / dust etc would collect on the edges and look really bad.

We have tiled downstairs and are getting the same carpets fitted up stairs/landing/all bedrooms next week.

I would have liked a runner, but wouldn't have gone (as our hall is tiled) and OH doesn't like it. I think it would be fine going to fully carpeted landing.

We have been advised to have the door strips in between (as carpets will be cut at these points for ease of fitting)

    Thanks all.

MrKB has spoken with the carpet guy and it's quite a bit more to have the edges whipped and rods fitted etc. Not to mention the fact we'd have to sand and stain the staircase to match the rest of the downstairs so we're going with fully covered staircase and door strips.
