Quick poll about gas vs electric hobs

Peaches, 28 April, 2009 at 20:47 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 29

Which would you choose if you had a choice?

Would you not buy / rent somewhere if it were one or the other?

Gas, every time! I believe its more efficient than electric too. Our house didn't have gas to the cooker when we moved in and I moved the hob from one side of the kitche to the other, with much difficulty, to have gas ?

    Gas every time.

Wouldn't bother me for the right house but gas would be preferable.

Gas, gas, gas for a hob (electric for my oven though). I have an electric hob here and I really don't like the lack of control you get with electric. I miss my gas....

It wouldn't make a difference to me if I was renting somewhere. I prefer the control of a gas hob, but I like the look of an electric hob better, it's more sleek and easier to clean. I'd probably be thinking more about whether a gas one was more expensive to run than an electric one at the moment, to be honest ?

    ☹️

So if you were a tenant you wouldn't appreciate a nice, clear, shiny black electric hob that's so easy to clean??

NB. I know you'd all say gas. I have turned houses down because they had no gas. But tenants don't clean very well (in my experience before you all lynch me!)

I found my gas hob easier to clean than my current electric one (although I have metal plate type thingies rather than a ceramic or glass type affair). I also hate that I can't see which rings have been on (and are still hot).

But if I was renting, it wouldn't put me off. The new-ness would be a big draw infact!

Gas all the way for me. I cooked on my sister electric hob a couple of weeks ago & it was a nightmare. I guess you get used to it, but I like that gas is easily turn off and onable

If I was renting short term, I'd probably put up with electric if the rest of the house was nice. If I was buying, the kitchen would have a huge influential feature for me, and I would choose gas over electric, although if I really loved the house & everything else was perfect, I may still go for it, but see if I could change to gas

FW, I know there are good tenants out there. We are tenants too, and I swear I clean (or have cleaned!) better than lots of owners. Come and be my tenants! I love good tenants!

KJX, this will be the 2nd house with a brand new kitchen*. In fact whoever moves in is getting a new house! It's been gutted right back to joists and brickwork. That fire caused quite some damage!

*The tenants who moved into our house have left, and have ruined the new sink by scratching the accessories with a green scourer ?

I'd prefer gas, but bought a flat with only electric supply (and indeed an oven that didn't work!), but would certainly appreciate a new hob and agree much easier to clean!

In the past we've always had electric ceramic hobs (both in places we've rented and owned) and I got on just fine with them. In our current house though it's gas and in the year we've been here i'm a definite convert to cooking on gas for the hob. Our range is a duel fuel so the top is gas and the ovens are electric which to me is an excellent idea as you effectively ge the best of both worlds.

If i were renting again i'd have no problems going back to electric but for houses/kitchens i'm buying it will be gas for me.

While i much prefer cooking on a gas hob, it wouldn't affect my choice of rental house or even a house I was buying. We are currently renting a flat with an electric hob, and it was pretty much this or nothing. Type of hob comes so far down the list of priorities, after size, price, location etc.

I'm not doing very well as I'm being emotional about it - if that's possible over a bloody hob!

I hate cooking on electric. Hate it so much I've turned down rental properties in the US because of it (one of the 'must-haves' on my check-list). The thing is, as much as I'd want gas, I also want the kitchen to look good for as long as possible, and gas hob if not clean look terrible. Plus, the ones in the range are SS, so that's subject to being scratched by tenants if they use a green scourer (as the one did in MY house on the sink thing ?), or don't treat it with TLC. For those of you who wipe your hobs with baby oil .. can you come and be my tenants?!

So gas for use, but electric for cleanliness. Although the electric is twice the price ?

It seems I'm a lone voice but, having had both in rental properties, I prefer electric. My Mum has a ceramic one (I think it's ceramic... glass-type top and touch controls rather than dials; reacts instantly when you change the temperature) and it's fantabulous.

Sorry but I prefer gas too. I will always choose a gas over an electronic hob when renting somewhere. And I find gas hobs easier to clean too.

Gas for me but I've been reading some praises somewhere about induction hobs, which are electric (magnetic) but said to be extremely quick heating things up. I wonder if anyone has had experience of it?

I have a vote for electric from my friend who always prefers to rent electric hobs as she doesn't worry about gas poisoning and whether she's turned off the hob then.

I'm a gas fan as well. My only niggle is that under the plates there's a hollow which is a nightmare to get clean! I do have a Stanley which has one big hotplate to cook on, and for cooking it's fine but then you always know it's hot as well so aren't likely to burn yourself.

Induction hobs are more energy efficient as they do not waste energy. We have one. They heat VERY quickly, but, as they re not actually applying heat, are als more reactive than electric, so you can cool quicker too - much more like gas.

So, my vote goes to induction for the cleanliness (things will rarely get burned onto induction - they are like ceramic but cleaner) and reactivity

Induction isn't an option! Doesn't matter how fantastic they are, I'm not putting one in! [tight git icon]

    It's gas vs electric only!

I haven't used gas in years, we don't have gas into the kitchen so we've stuck to electric. It wouldn't be a consideration for me when renting and I agree electric is much easier to clean

    For buying Id say gas

but as a tenant electric is easier to clean - we have a ceramic hob now but in the old place it was a crappy old style solid plate electric which was awful

Also as a landlord Id say electric as you say its easier to clean but if you have gas its one more thing on the gas safety cert hence more cost!!

Good point ILS, although when I was looking at the hobs yesterday and it crossed my mind about the certificate, it's not a huge amount for the gas hob.

This will be the only property with electric if I go this route, but it's the one with the most tenants being an HMO, so I think it's the way forward.

Gas every time. I also think gas hobs are easier to clean as food spills don't cook on, and you can scrub it properly (which you can't with electric as it gets scratched).

The gas hobs I was shown are SS, so I'm worried they'd end up scratched just like the stuff at our house (not hob, but sink accessories) ?

We never managed to scratch our ceramic hob. You get like a scraper thing to use to get burnt stuff off.

I found the ceramic hob at our last place scratched horribly. As Lois says, you get a special tool for cleaning them but, given that I couldn't rely on my husband to use it rather than a scourer (which will definitely scratch it), I certainly wouldn't rely on a tenant. I think a SS gas hob is much easier to clean and much more hard-wearing.
