Quick poll - cake HRML

jem179, 11 March, 2010 at 18:30 Posted on Planning 0 22

Today we received some more samples from our cake lady and we've finally decided on the flavours.

We are having the top tier fruit which we will be keeping then the other tiers for serving will be carrot and chocolate. The dilemma we now have is which way to have them... The cakes will be 7" and 10" round ones and we can't agree which flavour to have as the larger one. I need to get back to the cake lady and let her know (we were supposed to confirm everything a week ago but couldn't decide!!) so my question is, which would you rather have??

TIA

I love carrot cake, but I think it's definitely the more contentious option. Chocolate is the safe bet.

Like Jumbly Girl Carrot cake is my fave but I think that the majority like choccie - whenever I say carrot cake to people about 80% of them will go "Bleeeuurgh!" (or words to that effect!)

I love carrot cake, however I know plenty of people that don't so I would say go with the Chocolate as I think that will be the popular choice.

Carrot cake is yummy. But I would say chocolate for the bigger one - as this will probably suit more people's tastes.

Can I ask if this is a stacked cake, because if it is, carrot cake is notorious for being very light, and might not hold the weight of fruit cake.

Well, have spoken to the cake lady and she says we have to have carrot on the bottom to hold the weight of the other cakes (it is stacked but carrot supposedly holds the weight better than chocolate)...But as it's not how we wantedd it and she didnt tell us before, she's going to make us an extra chocolate cake to make up the number of portions at no extra charge. She really is lovely and her cakes are so good I could easily start putting weight on again!!lol

    Hi Jem,

I'm not doubting your cake lady, but as you probably know, carrot cake is normally very light in texture.

We would never use ours as a base tier, as even if it was dowelled correctly, the soft carrot cake could easily allow the dowels to move.

As for the fruit above the two sponges, this is a risk in itself, as fruit cakes are always the heaviest, so I'm puzzled.

Without being rude or anything, can I ask if the lady is a professional cake maker or just a hobbyist ?

    Hi Debbie

Yes, she is a professional not a hobbyist so I think I'm just going to have to trust her. The carrot cake is almost like a fruit cake in itself so I would think it would be fine. She is using large acrylic circle things to separate the tiers to spread the weight...

    I guess it's a denser mix then.

    Sounds fine !

I say carrot - thats my fave but I also like chocolate.

i take it your cake isn't stacked cos normally the heaviest would be at the bottom - in this case fruit
