Quick WWYD - Customer been charged wrong price

Hugo Brambles, 25 August, 2008 at 17:28 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 8

One of my regular cat sitting customers rang last week to book me for this bank holiday weekend. It was a bit last minute but she'd apparantly left me a message on the answerphone a week prior which I'd never got. Anyway I agreed to do the job and she requested the price so she could leave me a money out (some customers do this and some I leave a bill and they mail me the cheque). Anyhow I get to the job and when I saw the cheque I realised I'd only quoted her for one visit a day and not two so consequently I'd halved the pice. They are due back tomorrow so WWYD

a) leave a note apologising and explaining my mistake but letting them know for future reference (and also so they knew I'd been twice daily)

b) leave a note apologising and explaining my mistake and asking for them to mail me a cheque to cover the remainder (leaving an SAE)

c) something else

I'm kinda torn between a and b as I hate messing people about and wonder if I should just suck up it up or just stop making a big deal and leave a note to the tune of b?

You quoted her a price, so you should stick to it this time - so I would go with a

I agree. I would tell her that you made a mistake though, so she's not surprised when it's more next time.

I was going to say 'a' too, until I saw that they were a regular customer. As such, should they have a rough idea of price anyway? So perhaps you can get away with leaving a note or speaking to them on their return.

Tricky though - always hard when money is involved. At the end of the day if they are pleased with your work they will want to retain you so I'd be pleasant (which from your post I'm sure you will be anyway) and hope they are too.

    A. You quoted her the price and it's not her fault you quoted for one visit. If she's nice and realises it was a genuine mistake, she might offer to pay the difference. Otherwise, I think you'll have to suck it up this time.

'A' for me too. As Hoobygroovy also said, she may come good and give you the difference anyway, but as you quoted a price unfortunately it should stand.

Put the shoe on the other foot - how would you feel if you'd asked for a service and price, then once the job was done was told it would be double?

I'd tell her that you'd quoted for 1 visit, but in fact you went twice and therefore any future bookings would be at the correct price.

Hopefully, as a regular, she'll offer the difference, but she's not obliged to (AFAIK - a legal expert might know differently?!)

I think you would engender a great deal of goodwill by mentioning to her that you made an error with the pricing, but that a deal's a deal and therefore that you will take the hit on the shortfall.

I'd say you need to suck it up too HB, I'm afraid.

Just out of interest, what's the going rate for cat visits? Do you do dog and other pet visits too, or just cats?

Thanks all, I have no problems taking the hit, I fully accept it's my fault and it doesn't seem right to suddenly ask for double the amount. I suppose as a regular customer they will know I'm not taking the micky and as for why they didn't realise the difference I can't say but then neither did I!! ?

I do all pets from dogs and cats which are the most popular of course to horses, rabbits, guinea pigs, turtles, hamsters, fish, sheep, goats, chickens, donkeys.....actually I can't think of any more ? What I charge depends on how many cats and how far away from me they live but as a rough guide prices start at £8 per visit M-F and £12 per visit w/ends and bank hols. Some customers have me once a day but the majority like me to come am and pm.
